To bring everyone together while we're working from home, our Internal Communications and Workplace teams hold weekly "challenges" to engage and uplift employees. One of these challenges asked employees to share "silver linings" or bright spots in their day since they've been working from home. Here are a few we collected and wanted to share to hopefully get others thinking of what their silver linings are.
As we continue working towards social change and education, we feel it’s important to recognize significant milestones that have shaped our country. One very important moment is Juneteenth, a day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed two and half years prior, all enslaved people weren’t actually free until June 19, 1865. So today, we celebrate the freedom and journey of Black people in the U.S. and place emphasis on the work we still have to do now and going forward. For that reason, we’re observing today as a day of action by encouraging our employees to take the day off for education, reflection and to give time to non-profit organizations in our communities.
At 23andMe, love is in our DNA. Equality, equity, and inclusion of all people are integral parts of both our company and our product. We’ve been having and will continue having, honest and open discussions about how we can be better. And while we still have work to do, we stand proudly with not only our LGBTQ+ employees but with the community at large. Here’s what one employee wanted to share: “Growing up, I always wanted to just live my life without having to watch what I say or how I carry myself, without worrying about how people would react when they found out I wasn’t straight. It was always a calculated decision whether or not to let someone in my life. A couple of months after joining 23andMe, I was talking freely about my partner without any thought that I shouldn’t. For the first time in my life, I let my guard down. I never thought I’d be able to do that. Pride is the feeling that I can be myself. Pride is this feeling I never thought I’d have.”

In honor of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, 23andMe employees were given this past Tuesday off as a Mental Health Day. From beach trips to camping and hiking, here’s how employees relaxed and recharged during their day off!
Here at 23andMe, we understand that it’s a difficult time for everyone. We’ve created a COVID-19 tab in our Overview section with resources that we hope candidates, managers, and employees will find helpful. You can also find what our team is doing to help the scientific community, how you can help, and how we are taking care of our gene pool during this time.
We recently launched the 23andMe COVID-19 study to search for potential genetic factors associated with the severity of the disease. We've opened up the study to any eligible person who has been hospitalized with COVID-19, whether they are a 23andMe customer or not. We are all in this together and participation could help us understand how genetics might impact COVID-19. Learn more and help us spread the word.
We hope everyone had a "pheno-menal" Mother's Day! This year, we wanted to say thanks to all the moms who raised this ever-curious bunch of 23andMe-ers all sharing one goal – helping change the world for the better.
In celebration of DNA Day this year, employees were able to hear from some of the founding scientists of 23andMe about the early days of the company and their continued belief in the future power of DNA!
We've seen your questions coming in about COVID-19, and our scientists have curated some answers. Check out our new Information Center where we tackle topics like genetics and infectious disease, how COVID-19 tests work, and more.
