84 Lumber, a proud, nationally certified women’s business enterprise, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are pleased to once again team up for their annual EmpowerHER Grant, which will be awarded to a Pittsburgh-area woman-owned business. Local, woman-owned Pittsburgh-area businesses can be nominated for the $25,000 grant. Nominations will be evaluated by a panel consisting of members from the Penguins and 84 Lumber. The top 3 finalists will then be announced to the public, allowing them to vote and determine the winner. The EmpowerHER Grant is a part of 84 Lumber’s L.I.F.T. (Leading & Inspiring Females to Thrive) program with the Pittsburgh Penguins. “Supporting women-owned businesses is more than just a necessity – it’s an investment in equality, innovation, and strength in our community,” said Amy Smiley, vice president of marketing at 84 Lumber. “84 Lumber is always looking for opportunities to support women-owned businesses in the communities we serve across the country.”
84 Lumber has recognized its two 2024 End-of-Year Team Headquarters winners. The company launched the award program in 2022 to recognize associates twice a year in two categories: the Business Excellence Award and the Rising Star Award. The Business Excellence Award recognizes an associate who has demonstrated leadership skills, achievement, growth, and success at 84 Lumber. This was awarded to Emily Patrick, 84 Lumber’s customer relations manager. Patrick joined the company in May 2021 and was promoted to her current role in December 2021. “Emily greets all customers with a pleasant, welcoming tone,” an associate wrote in their award nomination submission. “She inspires those around her, and her dedication provides an exceptional customer experience that keeps customers coming back.” The second honor, the Rising Star Award, recognizes up-and-coming associates at 84 Lumber. This recognition was awarded to Christian Keir, construction estimator at 84 Lumber. This award is given to “an associate to watch, who has had a significant impact on their team, and has a bright future with the company.” Keir joined 84 Lumber in December 2023. “Christian has proved to be a good team player,” said an associate in their award submission. “Christian performs his responsibilities with high energy, intelligence, and a strong work ethic. He enjoys challenges and always goes above and beyond what is required of him.”
84 Lumber is proud to announce its sponsorship of an acre of land in the soon-to-be developed Franco Harris Memorial Park in the heart of Sewickley, Pennsylvania. Hoping to commemorate the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers player and community leader, a local nonprofit has started a campaign to build a 32-acre community park honoring Franco Harris. The park will be developed with parking, signage, trails, educational gardens, benches, tables, a pavilion, a small amphitheater, and a centrally located statue of Harris, featuring major donor recognition. According to Watchword Worldwide, a 501(c)(3) based out of Ambridge, Pennsylvania, former Pittsburgh Penguins player Mark Eaton’s father assisted the organization with acquiring the first 26 acres for the park. After Harris’ passing in December 2022, the nonprofit decided to turn the park into 32 acres, in honor of the legendary Steelers player’s iconic jersey number. Watchword Worldwide then created and registered the Franco Memorial Park as a nonprofit. Their goal is to enlist the assistance of at least 10 corporations to sponsor half of the 32 acres. Corporate sponsors will have naming rights in the park for its amenities, including two pavilions, a hillside amphitheater, a competition fitness course, information boards, among others. The Franco Harris Memorial Park then hopes to raise the remaining funds for the other 16 acres via public donations. 84 Lumber is the campaign’s first corporate sponsor.

The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, an 80-foot Sitka spruce, is lighting up the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol during the 2024 holiday season. The tree, selected from a different national forest each year in a tradition that began in 1970, traveled more than 4200 miles from the Tongass National Forest in Alaska – America’s largest national forest – to reach the West Lawn. The U.S Forest Service searched for the perfect tree, evaluating the characteristics of individual trees in the Tongass. The tree’s journey included 11 stops, where people signed the truck’s banner with personal messages, from Wrangell, Alaska through Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Altoona, Iowa, as well as Dover Air Force Base and Joint Base Andrews. 84 Lumber, the nation’s largest privately held building materials supplier, has been the presenting sponsor of what affectionately is known as “The People’s Tree” for three years. As part of its annual holiday celebration, 84 Lumber brought an early Christmas gift to Dover Air Force Base families by donating 84 Christmas trees during a private event held at Major George S. Welch Elementary School & Air Base Middle School. Holiday cheer also arrived at Joint Base Andrews where 84 Lumber also gifted 84 Christmas trees to military families as a small token of gratitude for their service and sacrifice before the tree’s last stop on its journey to Washington D.C.

The Associate of the Year Award is given to members who meet specific criteria, such as association and membership participation, involvement in the local chapter, and other requirements. The Associate Member of the Year Award was presented to Camp by Jason Reger, an outside sales representative at 84 Lumber’s Beaver, West Virginia store. “Joe is highly respected within the industry,” said 84 Lumber Central Divisional Vice President Phil Garuccio. “He’s the type of person who’ll be first to ask, ‘What do you need?’ and helps however he can. We’re proud to have Joe represent 84 Lumber in the community.”

The Tongass and Chugach National Forests, nonprofit partner Society of American Foresters, and presenting sponsor 84 Lumber, are excited to announce the 11 locations of the 2024 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Whistle-Stop Tour starting in Alaska’s “First City,” Ketchikan, and continuing to its final stop on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building. Every year, a different national forest is selected to provide a tree to appear on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building for the holiday season. The 2024 tree will be coming from Alaska’s National Forests. The first and only previous U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree to come from Alaska was sent from the Chugach National Forest in 2015. This year, the tree will come from the Tongass National Forest – America’s largest national forest. The tree’s 4,000-mile journey from Wrangell, Alaska, to the U.S. Capitol will kick off on Oct. 30, 2024. Over three weeks, the tour will travel to the Lower 48 by sea and then by truck from the Pacific coast of the United States to the eastern seaboard. “This event is an opportunity to impact so many communities across the country and is a key piece of U.S. holiday tradition,” said Maggie Hardy, owner and CEO of 84 Lumber. “For those able to attend the whistle-stops, the sense of excitement and togetherness is terrific.”
Careers in Construction Month, a national campaign observed every October, raises awareness about careers in the construction industry. The construction industry is often seen through a traditional lens, where roles like general contractor, electrician or plumber dominate the conversation. But at 84 Lumber, one of the nation's leading building materials suppliers, careers in construction extend far beyond the job site. According to Joe Jena, director of talent acquisition at 84 Lumber, the company’s expanding presence across the U.S. offers unique career pathways in construction, ranging from yard worker to manager trainee, providing a broad array of options for anyone willing to roll up their sleeves and embrace hard work. "84 Lumber is not what one would think about as a typical path into the construction industry," said Jena. “We are currently growing our multifamily, install, and manufacturing divisions. Individuals have the opportunity to work directly at job sites or gain hands-on experience at manufacturing plants.” With a footprint in 33 states and growing, 84 Lumber offers countless opportunities across the country. From day one, new employees are given a chance to prove their capabilities and move up the ladder. The Manager Trainee program, in particular, is designed to take individuals with a passion for learning and leadership, providing them with the knowledge and tools necessary to succeed.
