Despite not speaking Spanish or ever having visited the island before, Paige Miller applied to Amgen Puerto Rico’s FUEL ETRP rotational program to expand her horizons in a dynamic environment. Once she arrived, she not only gained new skills, but the support she needed to learn Spanish and adapt to the Boricua culture. “Throughout my rotations, each of my coworkers has offered to help me practice Spanish by creating a safe and encouraging learning environment for me to practice speaking—I was even encouraged to give part of my Rotation presentation in Spanish and received lots of positive feedback! My generational peers, who quickly became my close friends after I moved to the island, have appointed themselves as my cultural guides, suggesting beaches to explore, teaching me how to dance salsa, and feeding me my first tostón!”
