Our networks and support systems not only give us advice but encouragement and fresh perspectives. Business Performance Senior Manager Vivian has a strong network of women friends and colleagues who challenge, empower, motivate, and uplift her in her work and personal life: "The women in my life are truly awesome. They are not afraid to fully own the spaces they inhabit. At times, someone’s confidence may wane, the rest of us activate, rally around, and provide support as needed.”
We stand in solidarity with our Asian American and Pacific Islander staff. The senseless killings in Atlanta and the rising tide in hate crimes against Asian Americans are a sad reminder that the journey to end racism in our society is far from complete. Earlier today, Lori Johnston, EVP of Human Resources, and Judy Gawlik Brown, SVP, Corporate Affairs and executive sponsor of the Amgen Asian Association employee resource group, emailed U.S. staff. Developing women as role models and mentors is critical to helping women of all ages advance their careers. Those who Karen Breen works with at Amgen’s Dún Laoghaire, Ireland site, together with our WE2 (Women Empowered to be Exceptional) women’s resource group chapters, are a constant source of inspiration and education: “Within Amgen, we have plenty of role models with our female colleagues in Senior positions in the company and also the Irish women who relocated and are now based in the US in senior roles. We can all be inspired by these trailblazing women.”

For our next Women's History Month installment, Kathleen Sprague from Amgen Rhode Island shared ways we can help our female leaders continue to grow and advance equity in the workplace throughout COVID-19 and beyond. A mom herself, Kathleen is especially passionate about promoting a healthy work-life balance for working mothers and making time for family members: “For my family, I help to carry on traditions so they can be passed down to the next generation. I’ve also been the one setting up Zoom calls during the pandemic to ensure we connect outside of texting and emails.” We thank Kathleen and all working moms at Amgen for their dedication to their families and our patients!
LIVE. Doing good has far-reaching benefits for our staff and our culture. Through the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) Befriender, staff volunteers from Amgen Singapore Manufacturing have shared their passion for science with disadvantaged children through fun experiments that show how science is applicable to everyday life. Together, with like-minded Champions of Good companies in Singapore, we can all be a force of good and help sustain a compassionate and collaborative society that teaches our future leaders how science helps improve lives. How do you uplift the women in your life, whether that be in your workplace, home, or community? This Japanese proverb is Shalini Nemani's inspiration for choosing to be the best version of herself and empowering others to do the same. She shares: "Last year, I received an invitation to speak to a group of mostly young girls at a school in India. I shared my journey in pursuit of ikigai and the lessons I have learned along the way. I was blown away by the feedback and reception from the students and the school. It was a powerful lesson to me that we need to create more opportunities for ordinary people to share their lessons and empower each other as it can have a huge impact."
We’re honoring Women's History Month by spotlighting women from our Women Empowered to be Exceptional (WE2) resource group as they share their hopes for a more equal future. Today we feature Natasha Bond, who, as a mother with a teenage daughter, is very focused on female empowerment: “I have run programs to expose girls to career opportunities, mentorship, and motivational speakers designed to help girls understand how they can and should participate and self-advocate. I also hope that I am an advocate for early-career professional women at Amgen. It is critical that this next generation bring their expertise and approach to creating a more diverse and therefore more innovative dynamic.” Stay tuned for more spotlights throughout Women’s History Month.
