On Earth Day, Best Buy customers can see their collective impact like never before. You’ve heard us talk about the positive impact that comes from buying ENERGY STAR products and now, on this Earth Day, Best Buy is showing you. Our new ENERGY STAR tracker on BestBuy.com shows the estimated collective environmental and financial impact from sales of products in easy-to-understand terms. For instance, the amount of water we estimate customers will save this year from ENERGY STAR certified products could fill more than 25 million bathtubs! You can see for yourself on our Appliance and Sustainability pages. ENERGY STAR certified products use less energy and water, while helping reduce your energy bills. Selling these products is part of our commitment to helping customers reduce their environmental footprint and save money.
In trying times, employees lean on one another for support. The power of community is everything for Francis Lichauco. Every morning, he reaches out to his friends, family and Best Buy colleagues via text to share how he’s doing, quotes that motivate him and gratitude for the blessings in his life. “I like to think it inspires people, but they also inspire me with their support and compassion,” Francis said. An HR manager for omnichannel teams, Francis lives in California and began this morning ritual in March 2021 to connect with people during an isolating time. The COVID-19 pandemic was in full force, yet Francis had an additional challenge: He’d been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and had virtually no immune system. As he began to undergo chemotherapy treatment, he was confined to either his home with his family, or — due to hospital policies — alone at the Stanford Medical Center. “All I knew was that I had to fight,” he said. “My mental state helped me through it, I think. I wanted to let people know how I was doing and give them a little inspiration.”
Best Buy is proud to honor Women’s History Month and celebrate our women employees. Jessica Chapman first put on a Best Buy blue shirt 17 years ago at our store in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. The job was meant to be a temporary thing. She was looking for a full-time teaching position after graduating college with a teaching degree. However, Jessica soon learned she already had the teaching job she wanted by helping customers with technology and leading store teams. “I got to do what I intended to do, just not with kids,” she said. Throughout her Best Buy tenure, Jessica has held multiple leadership roles and worked for various locations in Wisconsin. Recently, she returned to the Menomonee Falls store but this time with a new title: General Manager. “I’m so excited to have my own building and build a strong, positive team culture like my own experience has been,” Jessica said. “It’s been amazing so far.”
Young boy’s wish comes true thanks to Massachusetts employees Brodie, a 12-year-old from Massachusetts, finds happiness in video games and watching movies with his younger brother as he battles leukemia. These two activities prompted him to make a wish: He wanted to have a shopping spree at his local Best Buy store. The Make-A-Wish® Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island heard about Brodie’s request and went to work. “He very specifically wanted Best Buy, so, it was getting in touch with someone from the exact store then figuring out what’s possible,” said Hannah Arbuthnot, wish grantor, Make-A-Wish® Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Brodie’s wish was to have a 50-inch TV, Amazon fire tablet and a gaming chair that sits on the ground. It didn’t take long for the Make-A-Wish and Best Buy teams to make it come true.
Best Buy is proud to be included on Ethisphere’s 2022 World’s Most Ethical Companies list. We are one of only three retailers on it, and it’s our eighth time earning the honor. The Ethisphere list recognizes companies based on culture, environmental and social practices, ethics and compliance activities, and diversity initiatives. Here are some of the efforts that contributed to our inclusion. • We continued our yearly employee Code of Ethics training. This required course for all employees contains examples of real-life, everyday situations that they might face and helps guide their decision making. • We announced our plans to open 100 Best Buy Teen Tech Center® locations by 2025. These centers provide participating youth access to tech tools, training and mentorship to help them prepare for the careers of the future. • We set a goal to help our customers reduce their carbon emissions 20% by 2030. • We launched a scholarship fund for students attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), committing to support at least 24 students over the next eight years.
Best Buy teams up with the Final Four • Best Buy believes in the endless potential young women can reach when they follow their dreams, on and off the court. With this year marking the 50th year of Title IX, a groundbreaking legislation for gender equality in sports, Best Buy is teaming up with the Final Four and Minnesota Sports and Events (MNSE) to celebrate women leaders who inspire, achieve, and empower. The milestone this year celebrates the passing of Title IX, a federal law that ensures women athletes have the right to equal opportunity in sports at educational institutions. The Final Four is made up of the top four performing collegiate basketball teams competing for a championship, with this year’s women’s tournament hosted in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Leading up to the Final Four, Best Buy has participated in several community events including a Title IX speaker series featuring CEO Corie Barry and Amelia Hardy, Best Buy’s Vice President of Strategic Community Engagement.
Best Buy's Take Stock project celebrates real stories through photographs When it comes to creating the stock photography we use for cultural moments and our marketing campaigns, we decided to do things differently this year. We wanted to give creators more control of their work, especially when it’s based on their identity and depicts their communities and unique perspectives. That’s where the Take Stock Project comes in. As part of the project this year, we asked three photographers to tell their own stories of how people in their communities use technology. We also funded each photoshoot and made sure the photographers retained the rights to sell their images anywhere, including stock photography sites.
For the fifth year in a row, Best Buy is proud to be recognized by Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies. In announcing this year’s list, Barron’s specifically highlighted our commitment to helping customers reduce their carbon emissions, our e-waste recycling program and our gender-diverse board of directors. Our efforts have consistently placed us in the top five, coming in this year at No. 4.
