Seeking a progressive long-term career with an innovative organization 5 years ago, Halimah Cleveland, Value Stream Leader for Security Systems, found her place with Bosch. Halimah desired to work for a company that valued #diversity and #inclusion. “A lot of companies give ‘lip service’ to D&I initiatives, however, Bosch is actively involved in ensuring this is a part of its culture.” Our flexible working culture has helped Halimah balance her career and family life while earning her MBA. Responsible for overseeing technical associates in a customization production environment, Halimah said “The most exciting experience for me was a new facility launch in Greer, SC. I get to see the configuration process upfront and collaborate with brilliant people across the globe.”
Starting her journey 10 years ago as intern, Miriam Doerfer, Business Strategy Market Manager for Bosch Rexroth in Charlotte, NC, was then hired as a trainee in the Rotational Development Program, providing a firm foundation to grow her career in business development and strategy. Miriam sits on the board of Women@Bosch helping to promote gender diversity and inclusion, focusing on the recruitment, retention and professional development of women at Bosch, and aiming to engage, educate and empower all associates on the facts and issues regarding gender diversity in the workplace.
Motivated by Eleanor Roosevelt’s famous quote, “To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart,” Dr. Patricia (Trish) Hayner, Production Systems Manager in Anderson, SC, has mentored students ages 6-18 in the FIRST® Robotics programs for 18+ years. Trish volunteers between 500 and 800 hours annually, managing and organizing 50 teams, mentoring students and judging robotics competitions. Coaching and encouraging the next generation of women in the workplace, Trish is a great example to all women in STEM careers.
As a woman in the workplace, Allison Fishman, Global Brand Director for Dremel, is inspired by researcher and storyteller, Brene Brown. “Brene dispels the myth that showing vulnerability is a sign of weakness. She insists that vulnerability is a sign of courage, helping bring yourself and those around you to a higher level of positive thinking and behavior.” Given a tremendous opportunity to work for and with women who she considers all to be mentors in important and unique ways, one of Allison’s earliest mentors stressed the importance of resilience through perspective. Feeling stressed? Zoom out, re-frame, and approach the topic again. #womenshistorymonth #womeninspiringwomen #lifeatboschusa
For Yvonne Brown, accomplished Market Development and Pricing Manager for Bosch Power Tools, Black History Month is a time to celebrate and recognize the life achievements of African Americans who have played vital roles in preserving the culture and paving the way to allow the life she lives today. “I honor those who came before me in the ways that I give back to my community, leaving a legacy for our children. Instilling in them the same values, beliefs, and sense of reverence for those who have trail blazed before us.” Passionate about Youth Advocacy, Yvonne finds purpose and fulfillment in serving, uplifting, encouraging and providing opportunities to inner-city youth that will enrich the lives of future generations.
While our formal Mentoring Program lasts 6 months, we celebrate 2 years of mentorship for Andrew Krier, Director of Powertrain Calibration Engineering and Michelle Cheng, Software Engineer. Michelle relays, “It takes time to build openness and trust, but Andy leads by example and encourages me to freely share my thoughts.” A remarkable story within the 2-year journey began with a challenging time for Michelle’s division. As her division worked through a restructure, Michelle’s team specifically was under a lot of pressure with many personnel changes. Having been through a recent restructure within his own division, Andy encouraged Michelle to capitalize on the opportunity to turn her ideas into a strategic team rebuild proposal. Michelle not only successfully contributed to the rebuilding of the now-thriving team, the project also lead her to pinpoint the career path she plans to pursue. Andy said, “The mentorship program encourages you to put yourself in someone else’s position, learn another perspective, and create empathy in a ‘risk-free’ relationship.”
Recognizing the achievements of Black ancestors during Black History Month, Tyrone Miller, Bosch Senior Financial Analyst, reflects on the tenacity of wealthy landowner O.W. Gurley. Best known for founding “Black Wall Street” or “Greenwood” post-civil war, O.W. Gurley built a 40-acre prosperous Black community in Tulsa, Oklahoma which housed Black-owned businesses, a school system, post office, banks and transportation system. “To build such an affluent Black community at a time where Blacks were considered an ‘inferior’ race goes to show the determination of my ancestors. I believe this same resolve and determination was passed down to future generations.” #lifeatboschusa #teambosch #letsberemarkable #associatespotlight http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vMjFP
Attracted to Bosch for its volunteering opportunities, mentor programs and non-profit organization support, Niara Simpson, Electrical Engineer within our Professional Development Trainee Program, is proud to be a part of a company that gives back in many ways. For Niara, “Black History Month is a time to understand and celebrate how Black communities have impacted American culture.” Passionate about hiking, reading, improvisation, sailing, wheel throwing and volleyball outside of work, in the workplace Niara is inspired by the opportunity to get outside of her comfort zone and move between positions to find her passion. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vMjFP
For Cindy Flourney, Customer Service Analyst, Black History Month is a time to think about what it means to be a woman of color, to inspire her children and the next generation, and to share in remembering, recognizing and honoring African Americans for playing indispensable roles in the history of our country. Cindy is most inspired by Maya Angelou as both her writing and the hardships she has overcome motivate Cindy to live boldly and bravely. A lover of travel and new experiences, Cindy strives to live by Maya’s words, “Anything that works against you can also work for you once you understand the Principle of Reverse.” http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vMjFP
During his internship, Moe Kanan, software engineer, created an app called "BBQ," or “Bosch Brilliant Questions." The app enables Bosch associates to submit meeting questions anonymously. Said Kanan, “I appreciate our management team allowing me to work on cutting-edge technology that empowers us to be creative and build apps such as BBQ. Being the product owner for the past couple of years has been extremely beneficial. I have learned how to manage a product and a team that runs in a very agile environment.” http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vMNeh
