A few weeks ago, members of our executive team joined some of our top performing sales leaders, whom we refer to as the Circle of Excellence, in the Dominican Republic to celebrate a fantastic year for Cengage Group. Formal and informal sessions were arranged to discuss how work has changed over the past few years and how we can evolve our better serve our customers. Michael Hansen, CEO, said “This face-to-face time was invaluable. Yes, we want our sales leaders and their significant others to relax and enjoy the trip, but we also want to bring everyone together for those intentional conversations that are critical in shaping our culture and driving our business.”
Employees at our distribution center recently received some wellness time off to enjoy a company picnic at Kings Island. Sarah N., Learning Consultant, and her family started their day off with the famous blue ice cream 🍦 Linda H., Customer Relationship Manager, had a blast riding the roller coasters, but said that the antique cars were more her speed 🚘 Lacy F., Documentation & Training Specialist, enjoyed the day with her niece, Kennedy, who was brave enough to sit in the front seat of every ride 🎢 Josiah M., Customer Support Associate, said it was a memorable day for his family, they even managed to get a photo with all 5 kids 📸 It was great to see our employees engaging and enjoying some well-deserved time off.

Our CEO, Michael Hansen hosted the co-leads of our Mental Health Alliance (MHA) Employee Resource Group (ERG), Courtney W. and Sarah D., in honor of Metal Health Awareness Month. “Mental health is just as important as our physical health. We wanted to create a community where people could bring every part of themselves, engage in open conversations, and learn how to manage a healthy lifestyle,” said Courtney. Sarah added that “COVID had a strong impact on mental health which is why we were inspired to create the MHA ERG. As a group we provide each other with recognition and support for every unique struggle and strength.” Michael also spoke about maintaining his own mental health, sharing that “I have had to overcome tragedy myself, and I found that talking about it openly and candidly helped me cope.” A huge thanks to the co-leads of our MHA ERG for their impactful work and for helping Cengage Group achieve Platinum Status for Mental Health America’s Bell Seal Assessment, a distinction awarded to companies that meet mentally healthy workplace standards.

Our Women in Tech Employee Resource Group works to promote a culture that supports and empowers women through shared practical insights, training and development, networking opportunities, and mentoring. The group recently hosted Lori Groth, CIO of the Industrial business unit at Stanley Black & Decker, Inc., as part of WiT’s impactful Career Journeys Speaker Series, which invites external and internal speakers to share their career journeys. Lori shared that she landed her current position, as CIO, by “taking on the hard projects, making good connections with people on my team, and networking with role models who I could turn into an advocate for me and my career.” Lori also shared her personal experiences being a working mom and how it has influenced her leadership style. She explains that “empathy is a key leadership quality. Taking time to understand what others are going through helps you relate to people and understand how their skills sets can be most effective.”
