If we’ve learned anything from the past 18 months, it’s that caring for your mental and emotional well-being is just as important as caring for your body. World Mental Health Day, observed every October 10th, serves as an important reminder to focus on your personal mental well-being and check in on others who may be struggling. Erin U. Starkey, LCSW #worldmentalhealthday2021 #mentalillnessawarenessweek #mentalhealthawareness
Breast cancer became the most common cancer globally as of 2021, accounting for 12% of all new annual cancer cases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In many cases there is no family history of breast cancer or other known risk factors and the diagnosis often comes as a devastating surprise. The emotional turmoil in response such as sadness, fear and anxiety can impact women’s physical health as well as their psychological well-being. October is #breastcancerawarenessmonth and an important time to recognize women (and men) affected by breast cancer, raise awareness about prevention and remind people support is available. Taking a team approach to care that includes both medical providers and mental health providers is optimal and increases overall health outcomes. #breastcancerawarenessmonth2021 #awarenessmatters
Did you know that over 15% of the global population has a disability and that people with disabilities experience double the unemployment rate that people without disabilities experience? Held every October, National Disabilities Employment Awareness (NDEAM) month is a fitting time to raise awareness of disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of people with disabilities to America’s workplaces and economy. This year’s theme is ‘America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion,’ highlighting the importance of ensuring that people with disabilities have full access to employment and community involvement during the national recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s important to reflect this month on what each of us can do to encourage employers to invest in the hiring, training, and promotion of people with disabilities. #NDEAM #disabilityemploymentmonth
Let’s honor National Stress Awareness Day every day by recognizing the role stress plays in people’s mental health and the importance of learning how to manage it and cope with it. Workplace stress is a silent, and often neglected factor which can impair health, productivity and absenteeism. According to a new ComPsych customer poll 87% of employers say the mental health of their employees is their biggest well-being concern. This week is an opportunity for employers to think about their employees’ well-being and offer support and resources to help address issues related to stress. Some considerations that employers and managers can implement: · Offer stress management training led by experienced experts who can engage employees with real-life examples · Provide an Employee Assistance Program which is available to employees and their families. · Encourage work/life balance and good communication to protect employees psychological well-being. #nationalstressawarenessday #employeementalhealth #mentalhealth

Not all New Year’s resolutions focus on finances, weight, and general health, some extend to mental health as well. In fact, making mental health resolutions can be an important new tradition to help those who struggle with change and help them regain their sense of balance. · Don’t be too hard on yourself. Remind yourself daily that as a human, you will make mistakes or miss goals, and that is okay. What is important is going forward in these situations in a positive manner. · Stay mindful and in the moment. Don’t dwell too much on the past or spend too much time fixating on the future. Remember to live in the here and now and enjoy all that life has to offer. · I will commit to being physically active each day. Studies have shown there is a link between mental and physical health. #newyear2022 #newyearsresolutions #mentalhealth #change
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD can affect up to 10 percent of people and occur more frequently in women. Symptoms can be sudden and surprising – and are more likely to happen during winter months with colder temperatures and less sunlight in the day. SAD can affect every aspect of a person’s life and reduces productivity at work as well. Employers can take steps to become more sensitive to the issue and make small changes that could make affected employees more comfortable during this time. #seasonalaffectivedisorder #mentalhealth #winterblues #productivity
