How do you create an organization that has the agility of a startup and the infrastructure of an established company? That's exactly what Cruise VP of Engineering Mohamed (Mo) ElShenawy set out to do when he joined Cruise two years ago. Mo uses his startup and Amazon experience to create the best of both worlds at Cruise. Listen to his full interview on the Change Wave podcast:
Instead of releasing a software update once a quarter, we now retrain the "brain" in our autonomous vehicles twice a week. That means each week, we release a software update, test the updated AI brain on the streets of San Francisco, learn from the data... and do it all over again! Early in his career, Cruise VP of Finance Bill Nash was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Submarine Force. His eight years of service profoundly shaped the way he manages teams today: “I learned the vital role that leaders play in establishing a climate that allows teams to be successful. I believe in the concept of Servant Leadership and try to apply it every day at Cruise.” We're proud to support our community of #VetsatCruise, and we’re grateful for what they teach us about leadership and sacrifice today and every day.
Cruise VP of Engineering Mo ElShenawy on why the best company cultures are high-performance with humanity: "They're inclusive, respectful, open, and peer-driven." Here's how we've cultivated a peer-driven engineering culture at Cruise:
Cruise Head of AI & ML Hussein Mehanna shares his experience democratizing #MachineLearning across an organization by creating: ✔️reusable ✔️shareable & ✔️discoverable multi-layered workflows.
We loved celebrating 30 years of the Potrero Hill Festival! Thanks to all our neighbors and friends (especially the furry ones!) who visited our booth, said hi to Everest (our AV!), and were curious about our fleet of all-electric, self-driving cars. Cruise AVs have the potential to help San Francisco reach our climate goals, make our roadways safer, and make transportation more accessible than ever before. Thanks to the Potrero Dogpatch Merchants Association (PDMA) for organizing a great event to raise money for the neighborhood community center. We look forward to seeing you next year.
Last weekend, Cruisers explored the great outdoors during our Camp Cruise event. Every year, we hold a summer picnic for Cruisers and their families and friends to forge meaningful connections outside of the office. This year, we hosted events in Seattle and San Francisco. From team bonding lawn activities to creating disaster preparedness kits for donation, Cruisers got out of the office, into the wilderness, and brought our core value of "work together" to life. Interested in joining Cruise with a family? We support our Cruiser families through generous parental leave policies, flexible vacation, a family expansion stipend, and dependent care FSA. Hussein Mehanna and Tianshi Gao met back in 2012 when they led Facebook’s Core Machine Learning team. Now, they’ve reunited at Cruise to tackle the next frontier for AI experts: autonomous vehicles. Hussein believes the work Cruisers are doing today will usher in the next wave of technology: “We are witnessing a revolution in AI algorithms, tooling, educational materials, and most importantly, applications that will impact everyday life. At Cruise, we’re pushing the limits of AI so that we can deliver the safest and most enjoyable autonomous rides.” To Tianshi, achieving this mission means assembling the right team: “I hope to build the best AI team in the world so we can develop the strongest AI systems, AI algorithms, and self-driving vehicles in the world.” Join us in solving the engineering challenge of our generation.
