Etsy is proud to be an on-ramp to economic opportunity for millions of entrepreneurs, including communities that face higher barriers to starting a business. Our teams headed to Washington, D.C. this week for a chance to talk with policymakers about what matters to micro businesses and celebrate makers across the country, with a special spotlight on the Gee’s Bend Quilters. Rep. Terri Sewell of Alabama welcomed quilters Claudia Pettway Charley, Stella Mae Pettway, and Doris Pettway Hacketts on Capitol Hill to share their entrepreneurial journeys through Etsy’s Uplift Makers Program, an initiative that opens doors to ecommerce for historic artisan communities facing economic hardships, in partnership with nonprofit Nest . Etsy Admin, along with CEO Josh Silverman and COO Raina Moskowitz, gathered with the quilters and the D.C. community for “The Fabric of our Hometowns,” an event celebrating the quilters and all the creative entrepreneurs who fuel our vibrant communities with their crafts. Thanks for the warm welcome, D.C.!
Connection and creativity are vital components of our culture here at Etsy. One way we foster this within our workplace — virtually or in the office— is through our fun community hour events! This time around, our colleagues in Dublin tapped into their inner artist talents to create a painting of the Samuel Beckett bridge, an iconic landmark in Ireland's capital city. Isn’t their artwork beautiful? Thank you to our Workplace team for organizing and to Paint by the Pints for instructing a step-by-step class in creating these masterpieces!
What’s your preferred working style? At Etsy, we are proud to offer three different work modes – remote, office-based, and flex – to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Today we’re spotlighting one of our remote colleagues, Karina Prado, a Senior QA Engineer here at Etsy. “Working from home has been a great opportunity to organize a work-life balance that focuses on the things important to me. I can explore more hobbies, like learning to play the acoustic guitar! I’m also able to schedule my well-being activities throughout the week, including working out and meal-prepping. Most importantly, I have more time to spend with my husband, who also works from home, and my two cats Hanna and Zabava. Fellow pet owners will understand how much petting your furry friends can recharge your energy after a meeting.” Thank you Karina for sharing how this work mode has enabled you to spend more time on the most meaningful things in your life. Stay in the loop to hear more Etsy remote-life experiences!
Who better to speak to PHP than the creator – and fellow Etsy Distinguished Engineer – himself? On December 7th at 7pm CT, join us virtually or in person at our Mexico Etsy office for an upcoming talk by Rasmus Lerdorf, the man behind this widely-used open-source scripting language. And to wrap it up, Rasmus will share what’s kept him motivated and engaged over his now 35-year long tech career. Click in to register and join us! In-person spots are limited to 80 seats at the Mexico City Etsy office but all are welcome to tune into the live stream.
Hot off the presses 🗞 We’re so excited to have rolled out our new image search feature! At Etsy, our teams are continuously evolving our marketplace to be more discoverable for buyers. This new feature does just that – helping make it easier for users to find truly special items, even when they can’t quite describe what they’re looking for. What do we love most about this feature? It’s an employee-led initiative that was developed as part of CodeMosaic — an annual Etsy Hackathon that gives engineers the opportunity to connect, share creative ideas, and build solutions to benefit our marketplace and community. Congrats to our team for using their passion and talent to build this feature from the ground up, giving users another more visual way to turn inspiration into reality!
Black Enterprise Magazine's BE SMART Hackathon was unforgettable! 100+ students from 19 Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) preparing to start their careers in tech were in attendance and we embraced the opportunity to connect with these scholars. For the tech competition, students participated in a 24-hour nonstop coding competition focused on improving customer loyalty, travel readiness, or product development for American Airlines. Etsy’s honored to have presented awards to the students who won the best overall pitch and best overall engineering design. “You are all winners. The effort and determination that I and fellow Etsy colleagues have witnessed were nothing short of extraordinary. You all showed up as your best selves and represented your schools very well!” shared Senior Software and Systems Engineer, Jerry Higgs after the competition. Throughout the multi-day event, Etsy members also presented their areas of expertise, organized fun tech exercises, and shared the opportunities that are possible at Etsy. A special thanks to our presenters!
We’re honored to have earned a spot on Crain's New York Business Fast 50 NYC list for 2022! This award is a true testament to the outstanding efforts our teams and leaders have made to help our community prosper economically, particularly throughout the last few years. We’ll continue to strive for nothing less with an emphasis on helping our colleagues and communities to feel supported, secure, and informed. Congratulations to our Etsy team and the other leading companies who continue to make strides in their industries.
Improving upon a production ML search ranking model isn’t easy. Building a new one from scratch – without compromising performance – can be even harder. But once completed? Etsy’s new neural ranking lifecycle cut our iteration time and time-to-deploy in HALF. In this post, Senior Applied Scientist Lucia Yu details our journey transitioning from a decision tree to our first-ever deep learning model for search ranking.
Grade A+’s were awarded all around during this year’s Etsy School semester! This global learning program is led by employees, for employees, and gives them the opportunity to don their teacher hats to educate others on their unique skills. Class subjects ranged from How to Nail Your At-Home Manicure, to Mandarin 101, and one teacher even shared tips for renovating a pre-war apartment. Talk about creativity! Etsy School has been a tradition since 2012 and this was our first ever season hosting hybrid classes after two years of being remote. This hybrid experience connected colleagues around the world to each other through the shared experience of learning a new skill. Special thanks to all of those who taught classes this year!
We reported our third quarter 2022 financial results on November 2, 2022. Our CEO, Josh Silverman, said: “We are pleased that Etsy’s business has remained strong in a volatile environment and we believe our sustained performance is a testament to Etsy’s unique position in e-commerce where, in a world of mass commodities supplied by companies obsessed with speed and scale, Etsy is the antidote. Our aspiration is for the Etsy marketplace to be the place for those who value human creativity, community, and feeling special. We've continued to invest to bring even more joy to the very human experiences of selling and buying on Etsy and have a lot of conviction that not only is e-commerce poised for meaningful growth over the medium-term, but each of the four Etsy marketplaces has a unique reason to succeed and win.” For full results visit our investors page.
