Observability – the ability to measure the internal states of a system by examining its outputs – may be a universal practice in software engineering, but it’s still an evolving concept in the machine learning space. What sounds like simple data logging and plotting can actually become downright difficult when ML-specific. In this Code as Craft post, Software Engineer Kyle Gallatin shares motivations for bringing ML observability to Etsy, the unique challenges our ML teams faced and how in the end, we came to a build-versus-buy decision.
Lots of companies are making verbal and written commitments to create opportunity and drive equity, but how many are taking concrete actions to do so? JUST Capital partnered with the Annie E. Casey Foundation to answer that very question, and Etsy is proud to be included as one of the Top 100 companies on their 2022 Workforce Equity and Mobility Ranking. In fact, we were ranked 1st in the industry in the categories of ‘How a company invests in its employees’ and ‘How a company minimizes its environmental impact.’ This list highlights the companies that perform best on key disclosure and performance metrics including diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, career development programs, local employment pipelines, fair pay, and quality worker benefits. What else can we say? Talent-Network’s conference in Guadalajara, Mexico was nothing short of amazing and we’re so excited to share our highlights from the event! Our colorful, eye-catching booth (see it in all its wonder in these pics 😉) served as our base for connecting and collaborating with talented Mexico-based engineers. We also heard from an array of Etsy speakers across our Tech, Product, and HR teams who dove into their topics of expertise. For instance, our very own Technical Sourcer Sheyla Vega took to our sponsored Talent Women Stage to speak about Etsy’s hiring practices. Thank you to our CDMX recruiting team for hosting interview workshops and sharing the opportunities that are possible at Etsy. Sally Bolig and Carolina Navarro, we’re grateful for all your work in bringing this memorable Talent Land booth to life! Our experience at #TLand2022 was unforgettable and we can’t wait to connect with you all at the next one!
Last year, Etsy began the exciting journey of establishing a regional presence in Mexico. Today, we’re continuing to hire and proud to share that we’ve grown our Mexico-based team to nearly 130 employees! In this recent blog post, we share more about the impact these members of our team have made already through a wide breadth of complex and technical projects, about our hybrid workforce in which employees are able to choose between “flex” schedules, working fully remote, or working fully in an Etsy office, and about mEtsyCo – a celebration occurring this very week!
How can you foster a culture of learning and openness through even the spiciest of post-mortems? Dr. Laura Maguire of Jeli.io and Etsy's own Kris Arnold will discuss just that during our next virtual Code As Craft Speaker Series. Join us on August 17th from 3-4 pm EDT to hear these experts explore and share their different perspectives on how creating the conditions for psychological safety can enable their teams to more comfortably wade into the aftermath of incidents. All are welcome so sign up for this virtual event here.
We’re proud to create global opportunities for our employees to make an environmental impact within their local communities. One way we demonstrate this is by volunteering through our Summer of Service program. Through both remote and on-site options, this programming provides opportunities for employees to have fun while giving back, connecting with old and new colleagues, and making meaningful differences. We’ve officially kicked off the 2022 summer season and this photo shares a glimpse into the cleanup projects we’ve done so far! In Dublin, teammates removed the marine litter from Ireland's coastline with Clean Coasts. In NYC, we picked up trash to give Greenwood Playground and Lincoln Terrace Park a fresh look while colleagues in Upstate New York restored a camp for underserved youth. Curious to know what other volunteer projects we have coming up? Stay tuned because we’ll share them throughout the rest of the Summer!
Familiar with end-to-end testing? In web development, the practice is meant to simulate an actual user exercising a website which gives engineers insights into aspects like ease of use and reliability. When implemented correctly, it’s a very powerful way to gain confidence in releases. However at Etsy, crafting our end-to-end tests used to be universally considered a negative experience. In fact, our engineers once rated the existing experience a 3.4 out of 10. Gratefully, by collecting colleagues' invaluable insights, we identified a solution. In our most recent Code as Craft post, Software Engineer Nathan Thompson shares how he used product management principles to deliver a new tool that has changed how Etsy does end-to-end testing today.
We reported our second quarter 2022 financial results on July 27, 2022. Our CEO, Josh Silverman, said: “Our second quarter results once again reflect that Etsy has maintained most of our pandemic gains, and that we are able to deliver strong bottom line performance while simultaneously investing in key initiatives. Despite facing headwinds caused by macroeconomic and geopolitical factors, we believe the improvements we’ve driven in customer experiences across the Etsy marketplace and our House of Brands, coupled with continued focus on our ‘Right to Win’ strategy, will enable us to unlock the enormous long-term opportunities we see ahead.” For full results visit our Investors Page.
We’re proud to share that Kruti Patel Goyal will be Depop’s next CEO, and our very own Nicholas Daniel will take over as Etsy’s Chief Product Officer. Please join us in congratulating Kruti and Nick!
Fun fact: Etsy powers our marketplace with 100% renewable electricity 🍃 We continuously strive to make business decisions that will have a more positive impact to the environment, such as our migration to Google Cloud which helped us to significantly reduce wasted energy compared to storing our data in data centers, all while moving faster and more efficiently and leveraging machine learning capabilities to improve user experiences. We continue to be a leader in corporate sustainability, from offsetting 100% of carbon emissions from shipping and packaging to our industry-leading carbon reduction goals, and we’re proud to be named a Google Cloud Retail and Sustainability Customer Award winner. Thank you Google Cloud for this acknowledgment of our commitment to reducing our footprint and advocating for solutions to create a healthier planet. Etsy’s 100% renewable electricity commitment includes the electricity used by the data centers that host Etsy.com, the Sell on Etsy app, and the Etsy app, and the electricity that powers Etsy’s global offices and US employees working remotely.
