Our partners at /dev/color – the global career accelerator for Black software engineers, technologists, and executives – caught up with our very own Lloyd W Sykes during their annual conference, #DCIMM. So what did they learn about our iOS Engineer? Lloyd shared the story of his pathway to Etsy after bootcamp and his favorite things about working at Etsy: experimenting, collecting data, and applying his learnings to create impactful customer products. This gives Lloyd and so many engineers at Etsy the opportunity to have meaningful and immediate impacts on the experiences they are building for Etsy customers! Interested in learning more about Lloyd? Explore his story as a Black Software Engineer and his engineering experience at Etsy.
For Etsy shop owners Val and Ray, what started as a small business in their kitchen has since grown into something so much bigger. The Pittsburgh couple created Tal & Bert to showcase their own hand-poured concrete designs as well as unique finds made by women-owned or minority-owned small businesses. We’re proud to amplify the works of our sellers throughout this #BlackHistoryMonth and all year ‘round. If you’re interested in discovering and supporting more Black-owned shops, check out their one-of-kind items on our Editors’ Picks page.
“Since moving to the US, I’ve found Black History Month to be a time to celebrate and share the achievements of Black people past and present. It’s particularly important because I often feel that the core historical curriculums has the undesired outcome of minimizing the positive impact of people of color. Representation matters. The BridgE community is both a valuable resource to lean on in difficult times and a great avenue for more light-hearted takes like where to get the best food or what music keeps you going on long days. Although the connection is different now that we gather virtually most often, I appreciate that we commit to having an active community.” We’re wrapping up our Black History month spotlights featuring members of our Black Resource & Identity Group at Etsy (BridgE) with Oore Ladipo! Oore is a Sr. Data Analyst on our Payments Analytics team and has been with Etsy for 3+ years. Visit our LifeAtEtsy Instagram or LinkedIn to see the other stories that our community shared throughout the month.
As Machine Learning (ML) teams within Etsy develop increasingly complex models to help connect buyers and sellers, the underlying platform needs to adapt and grow accordingly. In this post by Senior Software Engineers Sallie Walecka and Kyle Gallatin, learn how we evolved our ML platform to handle deep learning models for search ranking at scale.
We reported our fourth quarter and fiscal year 2022 financial results on February 22, 2023. Our CEO, Josh Silverman, said: “We are extremely proud of our team’s ability to dramatically improve the Etsy customer experience over the course of 2022. Despite significant macroeconomic headwinds, we maintained the vast majority of our pandemic gains and delivered double digit revenue growth and excellent profitability for the year. We believe our strong and steady performance proves the relevancy of our 'Right to Win' strategy, the focus and investment discipline of our teams, and the resiliency of our business model. Etsy truly stands for something different.” For full results visit our Investors Page.
“I’ve been fully remote for over two years at Etsy and I’m still loving it! Being able to get online as early as 8 A.M. to hammer out my hardest work, when Slack is quiet and the coffee is hot, is so beneficial for my focus and my work-life balance. And of course, my dog Tobin also appreciates having me home! Connecting with colleagues requires more intention when fully remote, and I am grateful for all the avenues Etsy provides to make and maintain those relationships. Since I’ve become a manager of a fully remote team, we’ve devised some remote-friendly fun activities, like learning to make homemade pasta from an Italian grandmother dialing in from Palombara Sabina, Italy. It’s been so fun to find strategic ways to connect in formal and informal ways.” Meet Megan Brannan 👋, a Buyer Quality Manager for the Member Services team, and a remote employee here at Etsy. We are proud to offer three different work modes – remote, office-based, and flex – to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Stay tuned for more Etsy remote-life experiences!
We brushed up on our creativity with a Sip & Paint session, Etsy style. CDMX-based employees stepped away from their screens to enjoy an interactive painting class, guided by experienced artists from Paint and Drink Urban. Who knew co-workers could double as art buddies? After painting unique takes on an Etsy illustration, folks took their masterpieces home to commemorate an afternoon of camaraderie. Thank you Paint and Drink Urban for bringing out the artists in us all!
Both recruiters and job candidates consider company culture an important element when extending or accepting offers. But how do recruiters and hiring managers successfully convey their culture to prospective hires in a remote world? On February 28th, Etsy’s Principal Product and Brand Recruiter, Nandita Joshi and Senior Product Design Manager, Jess Dale will discuss lessons they’ve learned about connecting with candidates in today’s commonly remote climate. Join us virtually at Tech Circus’s eCommerce Design Summit to learn why it’s important for candidates to get a feel for company culture, even when remote, and how recruiters and hiring managers can open up to prospective hires in a human-centered way. See you there!

It’s the Year of the Rabbit and we’re ringing in the Lunar New Year with fun-filled traditions and activities! Etsy’s Asian Resource Community employee resource group, ARC, hosted a few events during the multi-day celebration, starting off with a Chinese calligraphy workshop. Instructed by Ines Sun, members participated in breathing exercises, brush stroke practices and learned why and how to keep their learnings as a new healthy pattern for 2023. Sound super zen? It was! The fun continued with a festive Community Hour at our HQ! The lion dancing performance was a showstopper plus colleagues enjoyed sugar painting treats, a special raffle giveaway, and traditional new year treats by local vendors, Win Son Bakery and Mao's Bao. Thank you to ARC for sharing meaningful traditions and more about Chinese culture with our Etsy community. We hope you all have a prosperous and joyful new year!
