We have only one payments path for all of Etsy.com. So when an enhancement to our payments systems required that our payments data had to be redistributed to a new sharded infrastructure, well, the pressure was on to get it right. Here in part two of this Code as Craft series, Senior Operations Engineer Keith Wells shares how by using #Vitess and #MySQL – coupled with meticulous planning and testing – we were able to move 10's of billions of database rows into our new sharded payments environment while maintaining 100% uptime. Follow along because in the final post of this series, we’ll discuss how we reduced the risks that emerged during the cutover.
The first-ever MomPact awards are here! It’s meaningful to be featured among their Economic Impact Award winners, recognizing the employers who have partnered with The Mom Project to make the highest impact on their community members' economic well-being so far this year. Together, since 2019, we’ve made 176-lifetime hires, resulting in over $8 million in economic impact. 👏 Through our partnership with The Mom Project, who help with our backfill coverage efforts, Etsy is able to provide invaluable peace of mind to employees who decide to take leave. We are excited to work together to further our shared commitment to supporting mothers in the workplace

Without a payment subsystem, an e-commerce marketplace can’t function. So how do you safely redesign and migrate these systems while continuing to operate for millions of buyers and sellers? At Etsy, we decided to redesign and build for the future of our payments systems by moving our decades old data into a new, scalable, sharded environment with #Vitess & #MySQL. In this Code as Craft post, Senior Software Engineers River Rainne and Amy Ciavolino detail how we made application data models available for sharding. Follow along because throughout this three-part series, we’ll discuss what it takes to cut over a crucial high-traffic system, and then how we reduced the risks that emerged.
“Being a remote employee has entirely changed the way I live my life. I found a new level of flexibility I never thought was possible. I feel in charge of my time, allowing me to prioritize productivity, personal care, and intentional connection with those around me. Fun fact: I don't have a designated working space at home. I often work in my kitchen (because I love food) or I’ll switch up the location depending on my mood or the weather. Permitting us to be more human at work is what I like most about being a remote employee. And I believe it has made my work better too.” We’re delighted to feature our Senior Manager of Talent Programs, Andrea Baer, for this month's remote spotlight! At Etsy, we are proud to offer three different work modes – remote, office-based, and flex – to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team.
“My co-founder and I were the first Mexican women to receive Venture Capital investment for a tech company, marking a significant milestone. This ‘first’ played an important role as it led us to be featured in local press and events as spokeswomen who inspired other women to pursue entrepreneurship or tech careers. I have to admit, being the first can be challenging, but it’s also a very rewarding experience.” As we celebrate Women's History Month, we’re shining a light on a few of our trailblazing women leaders at Etsy and the stories that have helped to shape their careers. Today, we’re spotlighting Deborah Dana, Director of Product and Managing Director of Etsy Mexico! We’re confident that their stories will inspire and empower women in the industry. Join us in honoring their achievements and contributions to moving the needle for women in tech.
Etsy employees enjoyed some delicious sweet treats throughout the month of February! ☕️We introduced a new and immersive Treatsy experience. With treats sourced from local vendors, folks enjoyed a pop-up coffee shop experience featuring fresh-baked goodies, hot beverages, jive music, and a cozy atmosphere. 🧡On Valentine’s day we showed our appreciation for our work besties and teammates by crafting cute messages on heart-shaped cookies. "UR KPIs ROCK '' is the sweetest message ever! Don’t you think? 🥞Aroma of freshly flipped pancakes filled the air as employees in Dublin gathered for a breakfast in celebration of Pancake Tuesday! This tradition was created to use up products that would not be consumed during the upcoming Lenten season, such as eggs, milk, and butter. Enjoy hearing how our colleagues make memories together? Follow along via LinkedIn or the LifeAtEtsy Instagram for what we have planned this month!
“Raising awareness of inequities in the workplace is the first step toward rectifying them.” - Newsweek We’re thrilled to announce that Etsy has been included in Newsweek’s prestigious ranking of America’s Best Workplaces for Women in 2023. Surveying more than 37K female employees, 600 companies ranked the highest in categories like “compensation and benefits," "work-life balance" and "proactive management of a diverse workforce." 👏 We hope our efforts encourage other companies, especially those in STEM, to join in on leading the way in creating a workplace culture that supports and empowers gender equality.
We’re particularly proud that at Etsy nearly half of our leadership team are women. Chief Human Resources Officer, Kim Seymour is one of those outstanding leaders and we’re excited to see her voice amplified within the list of 25 Most Inspirational Women Leaders of 2023 by WWD. Please join us in celebrating her!
When a platform’s original architecture puts user experience at risk, it’s time to reevaluate. Etsy faced this conundrum not too long ago and we put together a plan to make our #Kafka cluster resilient to zonal failures. But for such an important service, the migration had to be accomplished with ZERO downtime in production. In this recent two-part post by Staff Software Engineer, Andrey Polyakov and Senior Software Engineer, Kamya Shethia, they share how we designed and migrated our #streaming #infrastructure on Google Kuberentes Engine (GKE) to prevent disruption during zonal outages.
