In honor of Mother's Day, we’re taking a moment to show some extra love and gratitude to all the wonderful moms! To celebrate the spirit of motherhood, we're sharing a glimpse into the life of one of our very own Etsy moms, Michelle Steinbach, a Policy Enforcement Manager and a co-chair of our MAGIC ERG, Etsy’s Marginalized Gender Identities Community. “As a non-binary Mother, Etsy’s employee resources groups like MAGIC, Queer, and Parents are so helpful in navigating identity and parenthood. It has given me the privilege to teach our family and Etsy friends about life outside the binary. My 4-year-old son, who understands that gender is a spectrum, refers to me as an ‘in betweener.’ I can’t wait for our newest addition to join the Etsy family soon, and I’m very grateful for the paid time off I will be provided during this family milestone.” Happy Mother’s Day to Michelle, and to all the other moms and families who celebrated this past weekend!

We reported our first quarter 2023 financial results on May 3rd, 2023. Our CEO, Josh Silverman, said: “We are pleased that Etsy has once again delivered solid top and bottom line performance in the first quarter, maintaining the vast majority of our pandemic gains in the face of stiff macroeconomic headwinds. We’ve kicked off an exciting pipeline of product development and marketing initiatives to drive improved customer experiences and engagement in 2023. We believe that Etsy can be more relevant, more often, to many more millions of buyers around the world. So we’ll be focused on welcoming new buyers to the joy of Etsy, deepening buyer curiosity and engagement, instilling trust when transacting with us, and being the preferred platform for our sellers because we help them grow effectively and efficiently.” For full results visit investors.etsy.com.

It’s #EarthDay 💚 and in fact, employees here at Etsy have been celebrating all month long. 🌻 We hosted an Ask-Me-Anything conversation focusing on sustainable living between employees and our waste management partner Spare-it, covering topics such as reducing waste and how to advocate for environmental awareness. 🥗 We demonstrated how food can benefit our local and global communities through various in-office meal themes that showed ways to minimize and repurpose food waste. 🌱 Employees at our Brooklyn office enjoyed an environmental-themed community hour featuring a pop-up farmers market, make-your-own plant terrariums, and farm-to-cup cocktails! Social and environmental impact has always been an important part of Etsy’s culture. Learn more about how we’re taking steps to protect our planet: https://etsy.me/3mMyN8t
When cutting over traffic from an unsharded keyspace to a sharded keyspace, different classes of errors may crop up. But because without a payment subsystem, an e-commerce marketplace can’t function, preparing for and navigating these errors during our payments system enhancement was essential. Here in the last part of this Code as Craft series, Senior Staff Software Engineer David Leibovic reviews four of the challenges we encountered and resolved using Vitess and MySQL, all the while maintaining 100% uptime.
We are thrilled to announce that our very own Ryan Scott, Chief Marketing Officer at Etsy, has been named one of Forbes’ 50 Entrepreneurial CMOs of the Year! Ryan’s entrepreneurial mindset and innovative strategies have contributed to a positive impact on Etsy, and our culture at large, and inspired us to think and work differently. Congratulations to Ryan and the other leaders who were selected among hundreds of nominations for making a difference in the marketing community.
Etsy remote employees met up in person and it was pure magic! They connected face-to-face in their respective cities, from Mexico to Philly, to create lasting memories. 🧡 In Austin, we had a fun game night at Austin Beerworks! 🧡 In Guadalajara, we met up at an art studio to create their own Alebrijes — whimsical carvings that represent the beauty, mystery, and magic of Mexico. 🧡 In Los Angeles, we had a co-working day and enjoyed lunch from Spitz Mediterranean Street Food. #Yum 🧡 In Philadelphia, we also had a co-working day and enjoyed bites from Pita Chip Philly! We’re grateful to Erica Topple, who leads our Remotes program at Etsy, for creating these opportunities for our remote employees to connect. Cheers to building relationships, strengthening our teams, and creating a sense of community no matter where we work.
This year's annual Mexico-based Women’s History Month event was absolutely inspiring. A few of Etsy’s technical leaders, Rachana Kumar, Deborah Dana, Carla Quezada, and coach Jill Hemphill hosted an in-person interactive group coaching session where folks learned about topics ranging from career progression to how to find your next mentor. The best part was seeing so many women connect and share their experiences. We hope everyone left feeling motivated and empowered. We certainly did!
