General Mills joined leading companies today in an agreement to end deforestation, protect national parks in Africa from illegal cocoa production and develop alternative livelihoods for affected smallholder farmers in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana. “To say that cocoa is a key ingredient in our baking products would be an understatement,” said Jim Murphy, president of our U.S. Meals & Baking division. “As we work to sustainably source 100 percent of our cocoa by 2020, we need partners on the ground to help us not only protect our supply chain, but also the farmers and resources upon which we depend. Washburn, a Civil War general whose dedication started an entire industry, and it continues today with all of you. And, we, as a company, have a duty to support veterans as they return from their service. That’s why we have focused on hiring veterans, who we know would be a great fit for General Mills.”
