In the 1990s, Green Bay packaging was already leading the industry in sustainable manufacturing solutions, receiving President George H.W. Bush's Environmental and Conservation Challenge award for innovative environmental excellence. The Green Bay Mill started using 100% recycled fiber to produce high-performance linerboard and became one of the first paper mills in the world to be totally effluent-free with zero discharge of wastewater. In the 1960s, GBP founded the Coated Labeled Products Division, expanding our customer product offerings into the label industry. Today, we have eight coated product locations across seven states and Mexico. Green Bay Packaging also began purchasing timberlands in Morrilton, Arkansas. The Fiber Resource Division was established to supply wood chips to the new Arkansas Kraft Pulp and Paper Mill built in 1965. Green Bay Packaging owns over 250,000 acres of sustainably managed forestlands in Arkansas today. Employees from five GBP divisions sponsored a Christmas tree for the Festival of Trees event hosted at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, WI. The tree was decorated with paper ornaments designed and produced by GBP employees. In 1942, GBP expanded our packaging offerings, establishing the Folding Carton Division in Green Bay, WI. In 1948, GBP became independent of outside sources for paper by establishing Green Bay Pulp and Paper, known today as the Green Bay Mill Division. The mill was built to produce the paper necessary to make corrugated shipping containers. Eighty-one years later, both facilities still operate in newly built production facilities. Green Bay Packaging was established in 1933 by George F. Kress to produce corrugated shipping containers. Corrugated containers offered a superior alternative to customers using expensive, cumbersome wooden boxes. In 1936, GBP purchased its first corrugator to produce corrugated shipping containers in Green Bay, WI, today known as the Green Bay Shipping Container Division.
