Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital in St. George, UT is opening six additional behavioral health unit beds this month to enhance community access to these vital services. The additional beds are added to the total number of behavioral health rooms at 24, with creating double occupancy in several rooms if needed. The inpatient rooms provide a safe resource to community members needing behavioral health treatment when they are at the highest risk of trauma. “Intermountain recently conducted our Community Health Needs Assessment, and addressing mental and behavioral health surfaced as the number one health care priority,” said Mitch Cloward, administrator of Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital. “Expanding the number of behavioral health beds is part of our stewardship to directly respond to our community’s needs and advance critical services. We continue to remain laser-focused on doing the right thing for all our patients, helping with medical needs regardless of ability to pay.”

We're happy to recognize Ellie Devitt, a St. Vincent Healthcare caregiver in Billings, MT, with 53 years of service to our organization and the greater Billings community. Ellie was part of one of the last graduating classes from the original St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1969. Ellie worked in pediatrics from when she graduated as a nurse until 1995 and enjoyed caring for our youngest patients. In 1996, she was part of the original team to launch the St. Vincent Transfer Center and has worked with the team ever since. When reflecting on her long career, Ellie shared that the people and the fulfilling work have kept her here at St. V's for more than 50 years. She shares advice and guidance for young nurses planning the next steps in their careers ."There is so much opportunity for nurses now," she shared. "Find an area where your passion is. That is a big part of it. If you enjoy what you do, why would you go elsewhere?" Thank you, Ellie, for your many years of service to the greater Billings community!

During Nurses Week last week, Intermountain Health welcomed Mark and Bonnie Barnes, the founders of the DAISY Award! The DAISY Award recognizes outstanding nurses who have gone above and beyond for their patients, and Intermountain was lucky to have five nurses presented with awards during the week. The couple visited five of Intermountain's hospitals, to meet with hospital staff and Intermountain leaders, and present certificates, cinnamon rolls, and awards to the nurses nominated for a DAISY Award. “Having Mark and Bonnie here has been wonderful,” said Mandy Richards, MSN, chief nursing executive. “It means a lot to the nurses to speak with people who want to show love and gratitude toward them. It’s been humbling to hear the patients’ stories through their nominations and learn why Mark and Bonnie have such a powerful desire to recognize and appreciate nurses. The significance of their visit to our teams during this week made the DAISY Awards even more special to our nurses.”

Intermountain Health medical informaticists have developed and implemented a novel and interoperable technology platform that hosts real-time clinical decision support tools to help medical providers use evidence-based medicine, algorithms, and artificial intelligence (AI) apps which aid them in making more precise diagnoses and treatment plans for patients at the bedside. “This advanced approach to using data builds on the strong culture of innovation we foster at Intermountain Health. Patient care is often complex and very personal. This gives providers another tool to help them give patients the best, individualized care possible and helps ensure the right decision is being made at the right time,” said Craig Richardville, chief digital and information officer at Intermountain.

Intermountain Health has joined a coalition that includes Amazon, Best Buy, CVS Health and a few other health systems to support federal legislation aimed at bringing more healthcare into the home. The Moving Health Home group says at-home care increases access and reduces costs without sacrificing quality or safety. "The pandemic has taught us, and polls confirm, that care in the home is preferred by many patients, with increasing demand for at-home options," coalition founder Krista Drobac said in an April 18 news release.
