Happy Nurses' Week to our Intermountain Health nurses and beyond! Our nurses play a pivotal role in our patients' health and healing, and in our ability to fulfill our mission of helping people live the healthiest lives possible. We appreciate you, this week and every day!
Happy Caregiver Appreciation Week! Caregiver Appreciation Week is our annual week-long celebration where we recognize all caregivers, regardless of their role, for their contributions to our organization. This year is extra special, as it’s our first Caregiver Appreciation Week as one organization. Intermountain Health is now a team of over 64,000 caregivers, across seven service states and remotely, all working to fulfill the same mission: helping people live the healthiest lives possible. The strength of each caregiver— locked arm-in-arm to serve patients, members, and our communities—is what makes us Intermountain and that’s something to celebrate. To our caregivers, thank you for the incredible work you do, not just this week, but every day throughout the year.
Congratulations to Dana Nordquist, RN and Trauma Nurse Course Curriculum (TNCC) Course Director at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, CO, for being recognized by the Colorado Trauma Network as the 2022-2023 Trauma Nurse Coordinator Level I-II of the Year! She was unanimously selected for her positive impact at both Good Samaritan and Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, CO. "She developed a Massive Transfusion Protocol process to ensure that patients are getting a 1:1:1 ratio of blood products. She is a thorough educator and is willing to help other hospitals achieve excellent trauma care." This is a tremendous and well-deserved achievement, congratulations Dana!
Intermountain Health has been named on the Women Tech Council’s 2023 Shatter List, an annual collection of top companies creating inclusive, empowering cultures for female workers. Intermountain and 40 other organizations made the list for building inclusive cultures with meaningful measures that help women break and surpass the glass ceiling in technology. Additionally, Intermountain has been an honoree every year since the list’s inception in 2018. “We’re honored that we made the list and that our leadership team and Intermountain as a whole support and empower our female workers,” said Suzie Draper, vice president of Business Ethics and Compliance. “Intermountain has invested in developing an internal program designed to empower and support women in leadership and women in technology by mentorship and coaching, leadership training, and networking opportunities,” she said.
For years, Mike Wood, operations director of critical care for St. George Regional Hospital in St. George, UT, has seen the impact organ donors can have on the life of a person in need; often serving as a spokesperson touting the crucial need for organ donation. Last year, inspired by an article he read in an Intermountain Health publication about a good Samaritan donor, and drawing on more than a decade of professional experience on the organ donation committee, Mike decided to take his commitment to a whole new level by donating one of his kidneys to a stranger. About a month after surgery, Mike found out just how much of an impact he had made. Not everyone wants, or is offered the opportunity, to connect with the organ recipient. But in Wood’s case, the man who received his kidney sent a letter expressing his heartfelt gratitude. Mike hopes that his experience will open people’s minds to the fact that living donation is an option, including the donation of a kidney, or part of the liver.
For Intermountain’s 14th annual Totally Awesome Innovation (TAI) Awards, Supply Chain caregivers across all regions submitted projects that cumulatively saved more than $1.4 million in costs and more than 400 labor hours. The TAI Awards encourage caregivers to find improvements, big or small, in their everyday tasks. “The TAI awards recognize the many individual efforts that drive team success, creative ideas, and challenge status quo,” said Brent Wigington, SCO senior director of Operations Integration. “They also celebrate the many team achievements that make Intermountain successful.” The year’s top prize, the Pinnacle Award, was led by Michelle Ereaux and Curtis Shcmidt from Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, MT. The Holy Rosary team noticed that their operating room had very limited visibility of its inventory. Caregivers installed a system pick line which enabled Holy Rosary caregivers the ability to streamline case picking, stocking, inventory management, and patient supply billing for procedures. The project was able to capture over $300,000 in lost revenue.

Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City, MT, now part of Intermountain Health, has received a $6 million grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to support the construction of a new comprehensive cancer center serving eastern Montana. The 12,000-square-foot center will provide radiation, medical and surgical oncology services to address the needs of cancer patients in rural Eastern Montana. The project will eliminate distance and access barriers to care for the people living in the region. This will be the only comprehensive cancer center within a 125-mile radius.
