“Choosing to become a librarian is choosing to believe in the best parts of human creativity.” Meet Camille, an Information Science Specialist working on JPL’s enterprise wiki, search system improvements, and reference librarianship. She was first drawn to librarianship because she loved books and reading, but soon learned that the field is so much beyond that. “Pursuing this work, especially at an organization like JPL, means passionately advocating for, and strategically enabling, effective knowledge capture and information sharing.” Camille believes JPL puts a premium on honesty and being yourself. “Leaning in to your truth can be hard – it is something I am still very much navigating – but the response to honest living and working at JPL, as far as I’ve seen, has been open-minded and supportive. Camille credits SPECTRUM (the lab’s LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group) for being an integral part in her journey coming out at work, and understanding and embracing her identity. “Find that place where you can thrive as yourself; that’s what is going to make you happiest. At JPL, I’ve found a great community that does that for me.” Meet Gabrielle, a Contracts Administrator for Earth Science missions and commercial programs. After studying choreography and English, Gabrielle got an MFA in creative writing and joined JPL as an administrative assistant. Her institutional knowledge and writing abilities opened the door for her current role in the Office of Contracts Management. “I love that my job allows me to be a liaison between the business and technical sides. At JPL I’m valued for who I am, and they want me to be more of that.” As a member of SPECTRUM (JPL’s LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group), Gabrielle encourages her colleagues to use inclusive vocabulary, conveying how tiny language adjustments in communication pieces can be huge in demonstrating allyship. In her free time, Gabrielle writes young adult novels about the inner struggles of hybrid identities. Explore open opportunities → http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vMEPL
“Diversity fosters creativity. Different backgrounds will have diversity of thought, which is critical to engineering problem-solving.” Meet Amila, a Mechatronics Engineer for the Sample Caching Subsystem on the Mars 2020 rover. He started his JPL journey as a student, and three years later Amila has come full-circle mentoring a team of students for Mars 2020 testing. Since 2016, Amila has been involved in various panels and events for SPECTRUM (JPL’s LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group). Amila hopes to be a role-model on Lab for other trans and gender non-conforming JPLers. He helped form a group that successfully advocated for gender-neutral bathrooms and inclusive pronoun usage etiquette. In his time outside of the Lab, Amila volunteers helping LGBTQ+ homeless youth in Los Angeles. “Everyone at JPL is so passionate about their work—they will always find the time to answer questions or help solve problems. The cooperative and supportive environment makes me excited to come to work because I’m spending time with friends, not just co-workers.” Explore open opportunities → http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vMFHH
