This week, the Hanover MA Fire Department visited Barstow Village to discuss fire evacuation plans and safety with residents, as well as complete optional apartment home evaluations and assessments for fire and life safety hazards. The Hanover Fire Department offers this unique program thanks to FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency's 'Fire Prevention & Safety Grant Program'. Their 'Home Safety Visit Program' provides residents aged 65 and older a no cost in-home evaluation and assessment for fire & life safety hazards by a specially trained Hanover Firefighter. The visit includes an assessment of current smoke & carbon monoxide alarms, electrical safety, escape planning, heating system & water temperature evaluation, emergency preparedness and trip & fall hazards. Firefighters identify issues and make corrections when possible. The Barstow Village residents who completed the assessment with the specially trained Hanover Firefighter also received a "goodie bag" which included a nightlight, hand sanitizer, oven mitt, and other goodies.
