In a Seattle Times article written by our CEO, Matt Oppenheimer, he highlights that "as immigration policy wars rage on in Washington, D.C., and the global economy struggles to weather the COVID-19 storm, we must begin to ask ourselves what would happen if we shifted the narrative from blaming immigrants to respecting their integral contributions to our society. What would happen if we embraced diversity and financial inclusion as opposed to fearing and rejecting them?" Read more on how we can "join together in correcting stigmas about immigrants and resetting broken systems that continue to hinder the many benefits immigration brings to our society".
While you might not be able to read the entire article (if you don't have a subscription to the Puget Sound Business Journal), our CEO Matt Oppenheimer discusses how Remitly has been supporting its employees throughout election season (via activation guides and workshops). At Remitly, we serve immigrant communities through digital remittances. While remittances did fall sharply in April, they quickly rebounded, and even climbed in some Latin American countries during the first six months of the year. This article recognizes that there are still barriers to digitizing remittances. Undocumented migrants are less likely to have bank accounts, for example. With Remitly, we are trying to work around these obstacles - hence, the launch of Passbook earlier this year, a new bank aimed at immigrants, which allows them to use a wider range of picture IDs to sign up than other banks do.
