Since 1976 each US President has designated February as Black History Month and encouraged the American people to learn and focus on the achievements of the African American community. President Gerald Ford officially recognized the first Black History Month in 1976 and called upon the American people to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” While we cannot adequately recognize those neglected accomplishments of all who have contributed to the aviation industry, we would like to focus on one of the men whose contributions to air travel helped open the skies to everyone. Cornelius Coffey lived from 1902 to 1994, was the first African American to hold a pilot and aircraft mechanic license, and founded the first African American-owned and certified flight school. Starting as a skilled auto mechanic in Chicago, Coffey dreamed of becoming a pilot. Facing difficulty in applying to flight schools that would not admit him because he was black, Coffey built his own plane
