I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at REI (New York, NY) in Jan 2015
Interview
Had a phone interview, thought it went well but the recruiter did not like what I had to say. I described all my work experiences and all the achievements that I accomplished in life but that was not what they were looking for. REI is looking for somebody who is in the "lifestyle" of outdoor activities. This is completely fine but I thought I was interviewing for a job position, not to go on an outdoor adventure. It is great to have that connection with a job and what you are selling but in the long run you can learn how to sell the items through training.

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at REI in Jun 2019
Interview
After applying online I was sent a 5 question questionnaire and given 3 days to complete it. After the questionnaire a phone interview was conducted and lasted about an hour.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at REI (Concord, CA) in Aug 2015
Interview
Recruiter set up initial interview. Completed an initial Interview via phone. Phone screen was about 8 questions discussing coaching, leadership, personal/hobby questions, what I liked about the outdoors, why REI. Definitely trying to get to know me as a person and what my leadership traits are. Overall a very positive experience. Seemed pretty comprehensive for just a sales manager job, but I guess they just are looking for how you'll be as a leader for one of their stores.
