Founded in 1958, Sequoia Living is a Bay Area-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing older adults with stimulating, joyful living environments and services that support and enrich their lives. Every day, our team members show up with their heads and hearts, ready to find ways to be better than we were yesterday.
At Sequoia Living, we believe that healthy aging is all about finding purpose, passion, and enjoyment. It starts with surrounding yourself with vibrant people and a place to call home that nourishes your growth. Because getting older isn’t the last chapter of a book — it’s the beginning of a new adventure where we never stop growing.
A History of Caring in the Bay Area
Deeply rooted in the concept of life care, Sequoia Living was the first
to develop a more comprehensive and inclusive retirement community
setting in the region. Since our founding in the 1950s, we’ve grown stronger through three name changes: first Northern California Presbyterian Homes, Inc., then Northern California Presbyterian Homes and Services (NCPHS), and finally Sequoia Living. Our focus has always remained the same: to provide joyful communities and
services to enrich the lives of those we serve.
Our commitment to excellence in senior living began over 65 years ago under the guiding philosophy: “Treat each resident with the respect they deserve and the special attention they need.”
Emmett and Alice Koelsch, established the family’s commitment to excellence to senior living in 1958. The Koelsch Communities story began with the first community, a nursing home located in Kelso, WA.
Growing up, each member of the Koelsch household was trained in all facets of quality senior care learning how to be, “Ladies and gentleman serving ladies and gentlemen.”
Aaron Koelsch, raised in that first nursing home, the Old Monticello Hall, now leads the company from his lifetime of experience and passion for Koelsch residents. Aaron’s wife, Judy, has brought style, class, a sense of timelessness, and elegance into each of the Koelsch communities through her design implementation.
Each person’s uniqueness is honored and served with the utmost care here at Koelsch. For over 60 years, we’ve developed impactful techniques to specifically help those who are dear to you thrive. LivingWell is how we engage with each person to serve their physical, social, and emotional needs.
Whether your loved one is just in the beginning stages of the journey or needing more one-on-one interaction, our community is the perfect alternative to a skilled nursing environment. Trained professional staff and registered nurses are onsite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to meet the specific needs of each person and are committed to bringing dignity, respect and the highest standards of service to all of our ‘family members’.
Our team is specially trained with making each resident encounter a personal one. Whether for a short respite stay or for a lifetime, our family will take care of your family.
