Mission Each United Way has its own mission, based on its strategic priorities and the direction set by its independent board. The best source of information on the United Way in which an individual is interested is that organization's individual website. Generally speaking, the mission of each United Way fits under the umbrella mission described on the United Way Worldwide web site, "To improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good."
Description The United Way network contains 1,800 independent and autonomous organizations located in approximately 40 countries. Each United Way sets its own priorities. Generally speaking, United Ways envision a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives. To that end, some UWs focus more heavily on education, some on financial stability, and some on health. All local United Ways are independent organizations with their own CEOs, boards, strategic plans, salary structures, benefit packages, and workplace culture. Some are small, some are large. Some are unionized, some are not. However, Glass Door requires all UWs to be aggregated in one profile. This is the preference of Glass Door, not of the UW network. When reading reviews, please remember that what is true of one United Way may not be true of another and what is true of the umbrella organization, United Way Worldwide, may not be true of local organizations.

We believe that everyone, regardless of their income, deserves fair representation and the ability to live free from discrimination, unlawful eviction, and other injustices.
Our areas of expertise include:
Housing law: Defending tenants from eviction, foreclosure, and homelessness prevention.
Disability advocacy: Helping individuals with disability rights claims and securing the services and benefits they are entitled to under the law.
Family law: Assisting with custody disputes, orders of protection, child support
We provide free legal services in thousands of cases each year as well as legal support to other non-profits, government agencies, and religious organizations.
LSLI is dedicated to providing equal access to basic human rights and services through the provision of high-quality legal representation, public information, and community advocacy training to ensure that low-income, disabled, and disadvantaged individuals have equal access to the civil justice system on Long Island.
The staff is comprised of attorneys, paralegals, social workers, and support staff. The social work component is a unique feature of the program and is based on the recognition that some of our clients may need special support and services to manage and deal effectively with the legal system.
