Pros

Most of the people I worked with were brilliant, caring, and a joy to work with. Pay is great for education space There is some innovative work being done

Cons

Mentality that because pay is great, can run folks into the ground. Right now there is mass attrition from ALL central office teams (including folks who have been there many years). Expectation to serve the whole child at the expense of the whole adult. Mentally healthy work environments and employee retention are viewed as a nice to have, not a need to have. When people leave - their work is often given to the rest of the team, instead of hiring someone new. It's common for folks do be doing multiple jobs and have ever-changing scopes of work. Avoid roles in the Office of Leadership Development! Once a great team - new leadership has created a toxic environment that has forced many wonderful, high-performing teammates out. Hybrid work format is absurd - central office work can be done remotely. Even when you're working in person, you're still having virtual meetings and conducting business like you do at home. Plus, with in person you have to deal with the commute and expensive/unbelievably hard to find parking. Constant urgency (and other characteristics of white supremacy culture) trickles down from senior leadership and permeates the entire organization.

Relatively high starting salary. Leadership opportunities available for motivated people.

Cons

Horribly unprofessional work environment. Long hours. Greater and greater expectations with fewer and fewer resources.

Pros

Things started off well before you are fully aware of how DCPS claimed policies vs. true practices. You are at the mercy of whoever is chosen to lead a school. If you are lucky to land at a school with reasonable objective leaders who do, as they say, things go well. If you are willing to let leaders take advantage of your goodwill without exemption things will go well. It is possible to experience the best of the best, but it won't last.

Cons

Leadership changes OFTEN. Beware. Your professional record and performance ratings that you cultivate are at risk. If you want to work hard and be recognized a change of leadership risks that. You could be faced with a subjective leader who lacks integrity and leadership. And values that once existed such as professionalism, objectivity, best practices, and mutual respect can be dismantled in a moment. And the underlying racism and bias that exists in all public schools rise to the surface. And, what is revealed is the worst of the worst. And CENTRAL office all the way up to Scott Brash (their head attorney) defends these disgusting racist, ableist administrators. The problem always starts at the top. So are you willing to risk your health and professional standing on a system that truly doesn't care about the health and well-being of their employees, even at some of DCPS's top-rated schools? The union is weak. Ask the union what cases they successfully arbitrated before joining.
