Thank you for posting about your experience working at The Chicago Lighthouse. We are always striving to improve our company culture, and this feedback is vital to that work. Though it seems you are a former employee, we would like to make anyone reading this aware that all employees are encouraged to bring these types of concerns and suggestions for improvement directly to our Human Resources department (without fear of reprisal) so that we may address them directly, promptly and effectively. We are pleased to hear that you found working with Chicago Lighthouse employees to be a positive experience, and we agree that our employees are among the best colleagues one can have. They are kind, caring, funny, insightful, creative, empathetic and possess many other positive attributes. Regarding your other concerns, in May, we implemented comprehensive management training throughout our organization. As of June 30, all managers completed a series of five courses designed to improve leadership, performance management, goal setting and communication. We expect these measures to have a positive effect in addressing the issues raised in your review. At the same time, we would like to emphasize that the best course of action for change is to bring them to our attention as they happen so that we may address them promptly and effectively.

Pros

I have worked at The Lighthouse for almost 2 years, and I have never met so many people dedicated to serving our mission community of the blind, visually impaired, otherwise disabled and Veterans. The leadership, led by the CEO and the Board, is committed to improving our employees' experiences with the same level of commitment the employees have for our patients and clients. There has been significant progress since I started and it’s continuing, with staff guiding the priorities and discussion.

Cons

No place is perfect, but the organization has identified and invested in key areas for growth and development and is committed to improving our employees' experiences.

Pros

Working from home after training and weekly pay

Cons

The management style here leaves much to be desired. There’s excessive micromanaging by individuals who lack the leadership skills necessary to effectively guide a team. Decisions that could easily be communicated via Teams are instead handled through unnecessary disruptions, such as system pauses, which come across as attempts to assert authority rather than foster collaboration. Leadership isn't about exerting control—it's about inspiring and guiding teams toward success. Dr. Szlyk has clearly made great strides in building a strong foundation for the organization, but unfortunately, these efforts are being undermined by ineffective management practices. It’s disappointing to see such potential being squandered. True leadership requires trust, clear communication, and empowerment—none of which seem to be prioritized here.

Dear Employee, Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed response. We appreciate your feedback and take these comments seriously. As you may or may not know, we have made employee engagement and satisfaction a high priority over the past few years, and that includes employee management. One of our strategic goals for this year is to make a more concerted effort toward management training. We have already committed for all of our managers to have participated in management training by the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2025), and we will continue with additional training through fiscal 2026 and beyond. This management training is one of the top priorities of our new Chief Operating Officer Brandie Knazze. We do appreciate your sharing concerns and recommendations for improvement. Please remember, you can also bring these concerns and suggestions directly to our Human Resources department.
