Pros

Some of talent still endures from Wakefield Beasely times. Some good projects are available to work on.

Cons

They let go of people over zoom call without any notice as soon as Covid crisis hit. What kind of company does this? Since Ozzie, with his oil salesman vibe, has taken the company over in 2019, things have just been going down. Many good people have left because of ugly corporate side since the merger. Some people who find themselves at top by fluke have started behaving like they own everything.

Thank you for your review. Change starts with feedback! We're sorry to hear that your experience working at NELSON wasn't what you wanted it to be. In the face of adversity, it is our job as an employer to handle tough situations with tact, thoughtfulness, and empathy. COVID continues to be an unprecedented and extremely difficult time in our history. In circumstances where we could not be in person with our Teammates, we did our best to, as compassionately as possible, share in the grief and hardship of this unprecedented situation - a decision that was not easy or ideal to make. We do remain committed to giving our Teammates transparency, respect, and dignity. Mergers are tricky - we can admit that! The goal is always to move the company forward by creating more opportunities and grow the NELSON team. Like any collaboration, there are challenges and bumps in the road. But our guiding principles through mergers are to keep our Teammates at the center of what decisions we make, and how we make them. We appreciate your constructive and candid feedback. Honesty helps us to grow, identify our blindspots, and keep the concerns of our Teammates in the forefront of how we can better serve them. We're proud of our talent and value their contributions that make NELSON an industry leader and innovator.

Pros

Remote work. No other pros.

Cons

Disappointing, to say the least. I was laid off recently with no warning and very little severance pay. Earlier this year, when the first round of layoffs happened, we were told that there would be no other layoffs, and they assure us that we were headed in the right direction. And then we were laid off with zero notice. This is despite NELSON continuing to acquire new firms and hiring for new positions. During my year long tenure here, I received zero feedback during my performance reviews, my skills grew very little, and I received no mentorship from senior staff. There just seems to be all talk and show from upper management. Why give the staff false hope that there won’t be any layoffs and then lay us off right before the holiday season? This ruthless and inhuman. I wish I had never joined the company in the first place. Do not join this company if you would like to thrive in your career, and want to learn and grow every day, this is an absolute waste of time.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. This has been a challenging and emotional time for us, and we appreciate your willingness to share your experience. Please know that your contribution to our organization has been invaluable, and your dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. This recent round of layoffs was not planned, and we didn’t anticipate any more layoffs at the time it was stated. The decision to initiate another round of layoffs was a difficult one, and it was not a reflection of your performance or your commitment to your role. As you are aware, this was a strategic move necessitated by the ever-changing business landscape we discussed during our last Town Hall. These steps, while not easy, are necessary for the continued future growth of our firm and we’re truly sorry for how this affected you personally. While it is painful to see you leave the company, I am confident that your capabilities and experience will serve you well in your future endeavors. We would like to assure you that we are committed to providing support during this transition. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need a reference, assistance with job placement, or any other form of support. We are here to help you in any way we can as you move forward in your career. If you have any questions or require further clarification regarding your layoff, please don't hesitate to contact our HR department. We are more than willing to provide any additional information you may need. Once again, thank you for your dedication and commitment to NELSON. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors, and hope our paths may cross again in the future.

Lots of layoffs

Pros

Decent projects and benefits. Some nice people. Ability to work remote

Cons

Decent overall firm with pretty good culture and benefits. The MultiFamily Residential Studio based out of Alpharetta, GA - while some good projects and nice people, is an absolute MESS. In my 20 plus years in the industry, I have never seen a more inefficient studio - honestly. I have been here for years now and saw the studio begin to fall apart in early 2023. The former studio leader was efficient and loved by all but moved onto corporate/national practice leader and really is not involved often anymore. The new studio leader has not been a studio favorite. Im frequently on calls with senior level employees who talk non-stop trash about the new studio leader, but when she appears on a zoom call - everyone acts like everything is sunshine and rainbows - honestly a bad way for any studio to be run. Studio leader is not involved and leaves everything to the project managers with zero guidance and you can’t really reach her without her seeming annoyed. LAYOFFS - in my time I’ve seen layoffs after layoffs. Like many have said in the reviews here - I saw them in late 2023 announce to the studio that they had to do some layoffs but that there would be no more layoffs for the rest of the year (they announced this on a MF/mixed-use zoom call with every single employee on the call) - 2 and half weeks later, i watched them lay off TONS of people right before the holidays (even people who had recently returned from maternity and paternity leave). No one wants to work for a company like that. In my time in the architecture field - I have seen project managers and project architects feel “safe” if they are on a long term project. NOPE not here, they will lay you off even if you are a PA or PM right in the middle of a project. They just need to hit their quarterly quota. The MultiFamily studio has ZERO drawing standards..no one can tell you what a drawing set should look like. The studio still doesn’t have a solid Revit template to use…I have never seen so many professionals spin their wheels and complain about templates. This studio spends more time complaining and figuring out what’s a good template to use, than actually working. Have never seen a team complete a a deadline on time…if it is - it’s a poor drawing set just to hit a deadline for a client. Have also seen many clients turn to other architects in my time here because of the poor execution. And sorry to say it - but the studio is in legal battles with clients over projects and poor dwgs. The bonus structure is a joke as many have wrote on here (and then I see Nelson respond to try to defend themselves). No bonuses. For example, they announced the end of year bonus for 2022 would be paid out sometime early in the 1st quarter of 2023. Employees kept reaching out to find out when the bonus would be sent out. Finally in like April 2023, they announced that they don’t make enough money to give out bonuses for 2022 lol. The pay raises are a joke, so if you do work here - try to negotiate a good starting salary because you may get a 3% yearly pay increase AT MOST. Honestly from everyone I talk to at the company, no one feels safe and feels like there could be more layoffs at any moment.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback. We’ll admit, the past few years have been challenging for us. We’ve had to make some tough decisions that have negatively impacted some of our teammates. Many of the policies that we have had to adjust are due to productivity and adapting to business needs. The success and satisfaction of our team members are our top priorities, and your input is essential in helping us improve our policies to better meet the needs and expectations of everyone. Our bonus program is closely tied to our business performance, and last year was particularly challenging for both us and our industry. However, we are optimistic for 2024 and want to emphasize that we are committed to fostering a positive work environment and ensuring that our compensation and reward programs are meeting expectations. Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review.
