Why Premera is Rated a 3 Star Company

Pros

There are people who are passionate and provide incredible service to our members.

Cons

On April 10th, Premera posted on our intranet (iHub) an article asking us to improve our current Glassdoor rating from a "3" rating to a "5" rating. It was signed by our senior recruiter. Her comment was she wanted employees to share "an authentic view of our culture". As you will see on April 10th, Premera employees started to assign 5 star ratings to Premera. The truth is, if the Sr. Recruiter wants an authentic view, than a 3 rating is about as good as it is going to get. Premera is incredibly political. There have been continued layoffs. However, what is more telling is how many people who work at Premera, have decided to leave Premera. It is not because change is hard, or health insurance is any more challenging than it ever has been. It has to do with poor leadership. It really is that simple. For those of you considering coming to Premera, especially those with a conscience, or hold true to integrity, please reconsider and apply somewhere else. Perhaps, and I hope, Premera will be someday great again. That time is not right now.

We truly value the feedback we receive via Glassdoor. We take each comment seriously, and you will see that each comment is reviewed by the departments they impact. We work to respond and show that we are listening by making improvements. In reference to the iHub article you mentioned, an article was published to bring awareness and encourage participation in this channel. This is common practice among organizations that are actively engaged in the feedback received via Glassdoor. The article did not request 5-star ratings. A string of 5-star ratings is not authentic and does not bring value to individuals reviewing Premera as a potential employer. The article asked for people to share their stories. We apologize for any misunderstanding. As an organization, we would like to improve our rating. And we would like to do so as a result of our employees sharing meaningful and authentic experiences with those who may be considering joining the Premera team. It is unfortunate to hear that you do not feel confident in Premera's leadership at this time. We encourage you to reach out to your leader or Human Resources to continue this conversation and partner to make improvements going forward.

Pros

Good Benefits and free parking. That's about it.

Cons

The information security engineers work every day under the fear of being let go by the management. The information security director runs the department with an iron fist and will get rid of employees he doesn't like. Many talented security engineers and managers either left or got laid off. Unless you thrive in threatening and hostile work environments, avoid working for Premera's information security department. And if you are currently working for the department, my advice is you apply for a position at other companies. The job market is hot right now and, if you want to jump ship, right now is a great time.

Disappointing

Pros

If you have a good manager, great place to work. In 11 years there I had 10 managers. Some good, a couple great ones, and a few bad ones.

Cons

They talk about culture but it's undefined. The culture they actually have created is one of fear of losing your job at a moment's notice. They're laying off people in batches so as not to stir up media attention while they are simultaneously hiring new people, replacing experienced well-paid employees with people with little or no experience and saving tons of money by paying entry-level wages. Another con is the uncertainty of the company's future in the current political environment.

Business decisions that affect employees are not made lightly. While challenging to hear that your experience was not what you desired, we appreciate your feedback and many years of service at Premera.
