November is Native American Heritage Month. As we honor this month, we want to share the thoughts from 23andMe Product Scientist II, Samantha A. Samantha's contributions have helped shape the 23andMe Ancestry Product including a recent update for customers with Indigenous ancestry from North America. “In 2021, while crafting the content for our ancestry update that added 8 Indigenous North American regions, I reached out to Indigenous American scientists and other experts who had meaningful connections to Native communities,” Samantha explains. “They provided a deeply thoughtful review of both the science driving the update and how information was presented to customers. Their input inspired our team to strive to create an experience that provided meaningful, accurate ancestry insights to customers, but also one that respected the sovereignty and dignity of Indigenous North American Peoples.” While customers are able to learn more about their Indigenous American ancestry, we hope to have a positive impact on the discussion through transparency and education.

We released a new 23andMe+ report on Hashimoto’s disease, powered by 23andMe research. Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system causes the thyroid gland to become inflamed and damaged, and over time produce less thyroid hormone. This condition can cause many different symptoms like fatigue or depression, and if left untreated, can be associated with other health conditions like heart problems. Members can learn about their genetic likelihood of developing it and actions they can take to promote thyroid and immune health.

Mikala Evans is a Quality Engineer responsible for complaints and design control. “Complaints at 23andMe are really interesting because I get to investigate whenever a potential problem with our medical device is raised. The other part of my role involves taking all the steps to ensure any new health reports are being released properly. This includes a lot of cross-functional work which I really enjoy,” said Mikala. Asked about her favorite part of working at 23andMe, she prefaced her answer by noting that she’s joined the company twice, once in 2015 and again after completing graduate school. “The reason I came back, and my favorite parts about the company, are the people and the flexibility. The people are not only brilliant but mission-focused. Having an important cause to rally behind is very important to me.” The flexibility, she said, is all about being able to explore different day-to-day tasks and even jobs within the company.

In honor of Veterans Day, we're celebrating by recognizing those who have served in the military, including some of our own. Our Military@ employee resource group is a space for former and current military service members and anyone who is or has been a military dependent at 23andMe. We asked a few members what Veterans Day means to them. Below is what they shared. We also held a company-wide celebration where Military@ discussed the history and reason of why we observe today, provided resources for veterans and their family members, and presented upcoming volunteer and support opportunities including information about K9s For Warriors and writing holiday cards for military families.
“The potential for 23andMe is really to massively change the way we are approaching our own health in terms of prevention,” said Anne Wojcicki, 23andMe’s CEO and co-founder. “I hope in 10 years we can have a society where people are proactively managing their health and getting information that helps them avoid disease.” #DiabetesAwarenessMonth
