Scientists from our Therapeutics organization recently presented details on the study design of our ongoing Phase 1 clinical trial at the annual meeting of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer. “Our hypothesis, backed by published research, is that drug targets based on human genetics are at least twice as likely to become successful medicines than those with no underlying human genetic evidence,'' said Dr. Jennifer Low, Head of Therapeutics Development at 23andMe. “We hope that 23ME-00610 will ultimately show clinical benefit to patients with a number of types of cancer.”
In findings presented at the American Society of Hematology annual meeting, researchers from 23andMe, The National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Johns Hopkins Medicine showed that having sickle cell trait is a risk factor for blood clots in the lungs. “This study, the largest to date on sickle cell trait, demonstrates the contribution 23andMe can make to understudied areas of research,” said Anjali Shastri, PhD, a 23andMe Senior Program Manager for Research.

Earlier this year we launched a study of sarcoidosis to better understand factors that contribute to this rare inflammatory disease in individuals with African ancestry and we are already gaining insights. As people have consented to participate in our study, we have learned more about their earliest symptoms, the types of symptoms and the treatments they’re using. While there is much that we do not yet understand about sarcoidosis, we’re excited by our early findings and hope to learn even more about this condition that disproportionately impacts the Black community and women. Check out our blog to learn more about this important work.

Dawn Ladd is a Patient Support Specialist focused on assisting patients, via phone or messaging, with any questions about Lemonaid Health (part of 23andMe). She also provides some tech support, connects patient calls to the medical team, and completes tasks as needed to assist the medical team and Lemonaid Pharmacy. Asked what she loves most about working at 23andMe, Dawn said she has two favorite aspects of her job. “I really love working for a company that is able to help people in a more meaningful way than what I was able to do in my previous job. Providing accessible, affordable healthcare is so important, especially in today's world and it means so much to me that I'm able to do that with Lemonaid Health, part of 23andMe.” The second thing she mentioned she loves is the company culture and friendship she’s found here. “It's just so supportive of not only me as a person, but as an employee with valuable input that can help the company achieve its goals.”
