Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) is held each October to observe and celebrate contributions of people with disabilities at work. In observance of DEAM, we want to highlight 23andHear, 23andMe’s employee resource group (ERG) that works to promote awareness of deafness and other disabilities. This community allows employees to provide and receive support in order to inspire confidence and help them be their authentic selves. Some of the efforts have included celebrating the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) through education and working with departments internally to instill globally inclusive accommodations, including captions on video calls.
It is estimated that up to 20% of Americans have experienced moderate to severe acne. As part of our 23andMe+ membership, we released a new report powered by 23andMe research on severe acne. This report allows members to see if their DNA is associated with an increased likelihood of having this condition. 23andMe is committed to fueling our customers’ health journeys on an ongoing basis because we know no one is ever done being healthy. That’s why we created 23andMe+, an annual membership that delivers exclusive reports and features throughout the year.
Our Therapeutics team had a department wide picnic earlier this month in order to come together and catch up. The picnic was filled with a lot of great food and even a few toasts to celebrate their accomplishments from the year so far.
Last week we held a Mental Health event for 23andMe employees where psychiatrist Dr. Pooja Lakshmin, MD discussed the stressors of pandemic parenting and how to deal with them, including re-framing your self-talk, cultivating flexibility and asking for help.

Xin Fang is a Computational Biologist on 23andMe’s Therapeutics team. We sat down (virtually) with her to learn more about her background and what it’s like to work as a scientist at 23andMe.
As a scientist on the Health Product R&D team, Sarah Laskey helps develop the science behind our Health reports. Any report that says “powered by 23andMe research” was developed by Sarah's team. They do this by building machine learning models, including polygenic risk scores, to predict disease likelihood based on genetic and non-genetic data. Sarah is also involved in many different extracurriculars at 23andMe. She has helped organize our Moving Day fundraiser for Parkinson’s Disease the past 4 years, she sings with our a cappella group called the Chromotones, and she has played on 23andMe’s softball and ultimate frisbee teams. On the DEI side, Sarah co-leads our community impact initiatives. She also helps with our communications team, employee resource groups, and events team. Outside of work, Sarah is a big baseball fan and loves going to games. She even visited nine different professional baseball parks this summer.
This past month, 23andMe employees hosted different "Summer Camp" activities around the Bay Area for families to join and meet up. From hiking and rock painting to dog meetups and potlucks, employees enjoyed getting outdoors and coming together.
As part of our 23andMe+ membership, we released a new report powered by 23andMe research on gestational diabetes. This report allows members who report their birth sex as female to learn about their genetic likelihood of developing this condition, which can complicate pregnancy, and provides lifestyle tips on ways to reduce risk. 23andMe is committed to fueling our customers’ health journeys on an ongoing basis because we know no one is ever done being healthy. That’s why we created 23andMe+, an annual membership that delivers exclusive reports and features throughout the year.
