84 Lumber has been recognized on Newsweek’s Most Trustworthy Companies in America 2024 list. The nation’s largest privately held supplier of building materials is among 700 companies awarded the distinction after a thorough survey and review. The award, announced on March 27, 2024, is presented by both Newsweek and Statista Inc., a statistics portal and industry ranking provider. Ranking No.12 in its category, Materials & Chemicals, 84 Lumber surpassed its competitors who were notably absent from the list. The company is also the only privately held supplier of building materials, manufactured components, and services mentioned. Per Statista, around 3,400 companies were identified for the survey. The companies, both private and public, are all headquartered in the U.S. and must have a revenue of more than $500 million. Statista then had 25,000 U.S. residents participate in a survey via an online access panel. The complete list of companies that made the list can be found here: https://www.newsweek.com/rankings/most-trustworthy-companies-america-2024 “I’m so proud of this distinction,” said 84 Lumber owner and CEO Maggie Hardy. “This is a true win for all our associates, customers, vendors, and everyone else who helps make 84 Lumber what it is today! This award is an example of how we operate each and every day.”
84 Lumber, the nation’s largest privately held building materials supplier, has started rebuilding after a fire destroyed part of the company’s Lexington, Kentucky facility earlier this year. Defying the odds, the company never stopped serving its customers and the public. 84 Lumber associates have been working to fulfill customer orders after the Jan. 20, 2024, fire at 2345 Palumbo Drive destroyed the main building and showroom. Despite the setback, the lumber company has been able to continue operations as normal. The rebuilding of a new store at the location has started. “It’s a miracle no one was hurt in that devastating fire,” said 84 Lumber store manager Jeff Byers. “We’re grateful for all area first responders who helped salvage as much as possible.” As a sign of the company’s gratitude, 84 Lumber is donating $150,000 to the Lexington Fraternal Order of Firefighters, with the money being equally distributed amongst the three stations that responded. “We can’t say ‘thank you’ enough to this community,” said Byers. “On behalf of myself and the team, we are truly grateful for everyone’s tremendous support.”

84 Lumber has announced area manager Mark Ingersoll will be moving to its Western Division, overseeing facilities in California, Nevada, and Arizona. “His accomplishments as a seasoned leader in our Southeast division, coupled with his commitment to the success of the company, makes him the best choice to manage our opportunities out west,” said 84 Lumber CEO and owner Maggie Hardy. “With all the ongoing growth in California, combined with our potential plans for key markets in the west, having Mark lead the charge is without a doubt the best move for us.” Ingersoll joined 84 Lumber in February 1992 as a Manager Trainee in Depew, New York. In 2002, Ingersoll was named as an Area Manager, overseeing 84 Lumber sites in Florida and Georgia. In 2018, he was tasked with overseeing the company’s operations in Georgia and eastern Tennessee and was named the 2019 Area Manager of the Year. “I’m humbled that 84 Lumber believes in my accomplishments and abilities as an area manager and that they’ve entrusted me with these new California stores and facilities,” said Ingersoll. “I know that our team’s success in the Atlanta market can be applied and enhanced in California. 84 Lumber’s future is looking very bright.” As the area manager, Ingersoll will be overseeing the new 84 Lumber locations, including Stockton and Riverside.
84 Lumber, the nation’s largest privately held supplier of building materials, manufactured components and industry-leading services for single and multifamily residences and commercial buildings, continues its expansion plans in the Western division with the opening of a new door shop in Denver, Colorado. 84 Lumber’s latest door shop, located at 11002 E 108th Ave. in Commerce City, Colorado, northeast of Denver, is an 81,952-square-foot building staffed by a team of associates ready to manage any custom or stock interior door needs for single-family or commercial construction. The new location will be one of more than 30 shops across the U.S. that are outfitted with top-of-the-line equipment. The Denver market is operating under Pete Cantu, area manager of the company’s Western division. “Our investment in these important markets helps strengthen 84 Lumber’s presence in the Western division,” said 84 Lumber’s chief operating officer, Frank Cicero. “We are also committed to providing the best service to our customers.” In Denver, 84 Lumber is working on plans for a bigger store. Currently using half of the building, the facility at 5170 Kalamath St., the store will be housed in a 19,431-square-foot building in the near future. Expansion in the state of Colorado will continue as 84 Lumber has also started construction on a new facility in Greeley, Colorado. The estimated completion of the 18,324-square-foot building with 7 acres of rail service is June 2024.
Working at an 84 Lumber store may not be the typical route to working in construction, but 84 Lumber, the nation's largest privately held building materials supplier, is anything but typical. “It’s no secret that the construction industry is facing a severe shortage of skilled workers. What’s less known is that the way into construction may not always be with a builder or contractor,” said Ken Kucera, vice president of installed sales and manufacturing, 84 Lumber. Primarily known as an industry leader in building supplies and services for single- and multi-family residences and commercial buildings, 84 Lumber also operates component plants, door shops, installation centers, and wood product shops. It offers kitchen and bath design services. The stores themselves carry a variety of building materials including siding, decking, windows, trim, roofing, and trusses. It’s where builders and industry pros not only get supplies but also the help they need to solve the challenge of securing skilled, reliable teams to complete installation. “Over the last decade, construction jobs have steadily increased, even during economic downturns,” said Kucera, who leads 84 Lumber’s strategy and implementation for growing the components manufacturing business across the country. “According to the National Center for Construction Education, 40 percent of the current construction workforce will retire by 2031, so the need for skilled workers is showing no signs of slowing."

How does your heritage influence who you are today? I am from Caracas, the capital and largest city of Venezuela. I was raised with good values at home, good discipline through sports, and a focus on education, which provided a foundation of determination and respect. From an early age, I understood the importance of putting your whole self into everything you do. My background also cultivated a willingness to help anyone who needs it, and an eagerness to listen, learn, and understand the importance of teamwork. 84 Lumber’s passion for people aligns perfectly with my values and that is what makes me proud of being a part of this company.
