More than 40 youth from Best Buy Teen Tech Centers™ across Los Angeles learned about entrepreneurship and market research this summer. Then they put their skills to use in a tech innovation challenge. The teens’ ideas varied from environmentally sustainable school lunches, to an app to find local music events, to an educational video game. “I was very impressed with how the young people took issues that they saw in their communities and industry and explored new ways to address them,” said Chheav, a Best Buy social impact manager. Best Buy interns enjoying summer of learning, fun • Editor’s note: Hannah Sethi, the author of this article, is part of the internship program and a senior at the University of Wisconsin. She is working with our talent acquisition team this summer. This summer, 115 Best Buy interns are gaining valuable professional experience while making a lasting impact on their teams. This is the first time our interns have worked in a hybrid model, spending some time on site and remote, similar to many of our corporate employees. Throughout the program, our interns have received opportunities for professional development, networking and some unforgettable fun with their teams and fellow interns. They’ve also participated in a variety of Best Buy inclusion groups, fully immersing themselves in the company’s culture.
Three years ago, Geek Squad Agent Kriegon Newby visited his uncle in California and knew it was where he wanted to be. “After my vacation ended, I sent out applications to California stores,” said Kriegon, who was living in Indiana. He got hired at Store 873 in Colma (near San Francisco), packed his car and drove west. Since then, Kriegon has not only built a life on the coast, but two careers: When he’s not traveling in his Geekmobile helping people with their home technology, he’s helping people reach fitness goals at a studio. “I’m up by 3:45 a.m. I coach three classes in the morning, and then I work my nine to five at Best Buy,” Kriegon said. Since joining Best Buy in 2018, Kriegon has discovered his natural strength is connecting with customers. His supervisor, Jay Lisby, would agree. “He has this intrinsic passion. He cares about the individual customer experience,” said Jay, Market 8 home services senior manager. “It’s something you really can’t teach.” That passion translates well to strength and endurance training, too. Kriegon has found parallels between his two roles, including being encouraging, friendly and willing to explain things — whether it’s about tech or fitness. He also aims to bring the same level of high energy and passion to each.
Allyship and connection are part of Best’s Buy DNA. People and spaces, like our Pride Employee Resource Group, that offer allyship and connection can provide hope and help employees feel like they belong at Best Buy. EZ and Morgan are two employees who’ve inspired hope in their colleagues and contributed to Best Buy’s culture of inclusion by sharing their experiences and supporting others to live as their authentic selves.
We’re excited to celebrate a major milestone in Minnesota today with the opening of the state’s 10th Best Buy Teen Tech Center®, a program of the Best Buy Foundation. The new center, located at the Richfield Middle School Boys & Girls Club powered by Premium Retail, is the 53rd Teen Tech Center to open. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the foundation’s signature program, and Best Buy is committed to help build 100 Teen Tech Centers across the country by 2025. Each location provides a safe space for teens to create, learn and explore using the latest cutting-edge technology.
Two Best Buy teams recently volunteered with nonprofit Junior Achievement to help the next generation learn about personal finances and business. Junior Achievement is dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their futures and make smart academic and economic choices. Best Buy is proud to announce our national ad campaign featuring Best Buy Teen Tech Centers™ was selected as the Best Social Impact Video in the 2023 Halo Awards from Engage for Good. The Halo Awards recognize corporate social impact initiatives that show outstanding customer or employee engagement efforts. The “Mentor Moments” campaign launched last year with three short films featuring real teen/mentor pairs from three Teen Tech Centers. Director Rodney Lucas, story producer Bridget Botchway Bradley and photographer Akilah Townsend worked closely with the teens and adults to highlight the importance of positive mentoring relationships in helping teens achieve their dreams.
