We really enjoy introducing you to our colleagues, because we work with some incredible people! We figured we’d create a Mathematician Monday post and introduce you to Wesley Phoa, one of our Portfolio Managers. We asked him to share a picture and some words about his background and role at Capital Group: “After finishing my PhD in pure mathematics, I spent a few years as a postdoc before moving to an investment bank. I joined Capital Group in 1999, doing quant and macro research with our Capital Strategy Research team. Now I help design and manage Capital’s portfolio solutions. Even though my dissertation had nothing to do with investing, I use my academic training every day. That’s because mathematical research isn’t about following recipes; instead, it involves exploring new situations, finding the right questions to ask, and learning new techniques to answer them.” ©Capital Group
¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Several virtual Capital Group events will be taking place today. “What is Cinco de Mayo? Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican heritage. The Spanish phrase means ‘Fifth of May.’ It commemorates the date of the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. The victory monument statue on Mount Popocatepet in Puebla Mexico is pictured above. The U.S. celebration of the holiday began in California in 1863 as an expression of solidarity with Mexico against the French. By the 1930s, the holiday spread and was considered an opportunity to celebrate Mexican identity, promote cultural awareness, and build community. Cinco de Mayo is sometimes confused with Mexican Independence Day, which is September 16. Let’s celebrate! Cinco de Mayo is a colorful, inclusive festival. American celebrations of Cinco de Mayo feature parades and parties including Mariachi bands, Mexican folk music, dancing, Mexican and Mexican-American cuisine, Mexican-inspired cocktails, and attire." - Henry Ford College

Happy Administrative Professional’s Day! We have so many incredible administrative assistants at Capital Group. Today, we asked Nicole Godinez from our Insights and Analytics team to share some words: “Showing up for work is really easy knowing I get to bring my authentic self to CG every day. There hasn’t been a day since I started working here that I haven’t felt like I couldn’t be my true self at work. I am also proud to work for a company that understands the value that administrative professionals bring to the workplace. My organization skills are not just utilized when playing calendar Tetris…they’re leveraged to help unite teams, to recognize blind spots, and to be additive in leadership settings.” ©Capital Group
Happy National Volunteer Month! “Can I lead in my community knowing that my company is stepping up as well? Working at Capital Group, I can. I love everything about the performing arts — theater, music, dance — you name it. When I decided to share my passion with young students in the neighborhood, I tapped into Capital Group's charitable resources. I'm proud to work for a company that puts its money where our hearts are, supporting the causes that associates care about most. Bravo!” – Emily, Technology Rotation Program ©Capital Group
Happy International Transgender Day of Visibility! Jamie Burier is one of our Retirement Plan Support Associates based in Carmel, IN. We asked him to share a bit of his story with us in honor of today. “I started my medical transition 3 years ago and I’m so thankful to work for a company that took my trans identity in stride like it was a normal everyday part of life. When I was initially researching companies to work for, I did quite a bit of research on career sites like Glassdoor. I was impressed with what I read about Capital Group and LGBTQIA+ associate experiences. My initial interviews with leadership confirmed that this was a place that would accept me for who I am. Additionally, to work for a company that offers a healthcare plan that considers transgender related care is so necessary. Capital Group is a great place to work because they really welcome everyone to just come to work as themselves.” – Jamie ©CapitalGroup
