Hej! I’m Kyra Ellzysmith, an Innovation and Co-Creation Catalyst here at IKEA, and this is my wife, Cheryl, on the left! To me, Pride is a chance to take the time to celebrate who we are, be proud of what makes us different and be accepting of people owning their true selves. I love that Pride helps people grow their own pride within themselves by allowing them to show who they are with no judgements and full acceptance. My family celebrates Pride by traveling to Rehoboth at the beginning of the month every year for a large gathering of the LGBTQ+ community. Here, we reunite with lifetime friends and experience different sides of our community and how it’s grown. My wife and I love seeing nontraditional families and how accepting our culture is. We also love welcoming newcomers! Through all this, we get to share our experiences as well as learn from other peoples’ experiences, which helps all of us to better live our lives, change and evolve.

For #Pride, our Pride Progress flag goes up, both at home and IKEA. We also host dinner events, where friends and allies of all ages share stories of their life journeys around Pride! I’m so inspired by IKEA and my co-workers. The diversity and love within the IKEA community is positively overpowering. To my allies, I encourage you to practice Appreciative Inquiry. With a positive approach, an ally can ask me anything; I will always be caring and honest. Historically, allies have moved mountains that the impacted group themselves could not budge. I adore and respect our allies. To me, Pride means an inner feeling of freedom to bring my whole self into a space. IKEA gives me that.

Growing up, I was bullied and questioned by others. Once I accepted my uniqueness, I was able to enjoy and feel part of the Gay community, and my family and friends. To me, Pride means accepting who I am and supporting others in their steps to accepting themselves and others. Plus, the Pride parades around the world are fantastic! At IKEA, I found the energy to be open and share who I am. After being with IKEA for over 10 years, I see every day the support they give to our community. Hej! My name is Liberty Sagucio-Nittel and I’m a People & Culture Generalist at IKEA Burbank. I was born and raised in Los Angeles after my parents came to the U.S. from the Philippines to pursue a better life for our family. Although I wasn’t born in the motherland or may not speak Tagalog, my parents always stressed that it doesn’t make me any less Filipino than them! While my parents assimilated to American culture, they always made sure to instill in me the importance of our Filipino traditions and culture – which I hope to do for my daughter and her children. They taught me to love & support family unconditionally, respect our elders and that it’s okay to eat rice and fried eggs with a spoon and a fork! 😊

Celebrating #AAPIHeritageMonth means celebrating my favorite things about Vietnamese culture. One of my favorite holidays, Tet (Lunar New Year), is when my entire family gets together to wish each other good luck and hope for the best during the new year while giving all the children li xi (lucky money).
