On May 8 Kaiser Permanente was named Corporation of the Year for the second year in a row from the Western Region Minority Supplier Development Council at its 37th annual awards gala in San Francisco. In 2014 Kaiser Permanente surpassed its goal to purchase $1.1 billion for products and services from minority- and women-owned businesses, with a record total of $1.5 billion. We have always known that Kaiser Permanente’s hospitals were safe and now the numbers are in. According to the Leapfrog Group’s just-released Hospital Safety Scores, 81 percent of Kaiser Permanente hospitals received an “A” grade, while nationally only 30 percent of non-Kaiser Permanente hospitals received an “A.” Considered the gold standard for rating patient safety, the Hospital Safety Score analyzes 28 variables based on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the American Hospital Association and its own Leapfrog survey. Women diagnosed with breast cancer who previously breastfed their babies had a 30 percent overall decreased risk of the disease recurring, according to a new Kaiser Permanente study published today in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
