“Words can’t describe the feeling of support and love.” That’s what one nurse from Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, Virginia said Tuesday, April 14, 2020 after dozens of first responders from across the Middle Peninsula surrounded the hospital with their firetrucks, squad cars, ambulances, rescue boat and more to pay tribute to the health care heroes working on the front lines of the battle against COVID-19. Their tribute started at 6 p.m. when, after being rallied over their radios, each vehicle blared their horns and sirens and turned on their lights for the entire medical team and patients inside to hear their sounds of solidarity. In front of the main entrance to the hospital, two fire trucks lifted their ladders in the air to display an American flag that once flew on the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy on the first night of Desert Storm.
Churches of the Virginia Peninsula rallied for the team members at Riverside Regional Medical Center, bringing food trucks and restaurant catering to the Newport News hospital for a special luncheon Sunday, April 12, 2020. Churches participating included Hampton Roads Fellowship, Poquoson Baptist Church, Catalyst Church, Next Level Church and Bethel Baptist Church. Food was provided by Smoke BBQ, Jessie Lou’s Mobile Food and Catering, STUFT Food Truck and Flame and Pie Mobile Pizzeria. “To have this overwhelming amount of support on this holiday weekend for our team members is humbling,” said Riverside Regional Medical Center President Mike Doucette. “We are grateful for all the community support we have been receiving during this time.”
If there is one thing we are seeing from community to community, it’s people coming together. People working together. People supporting each other…together as one. Across all of our hospitals and clinics, the same is true. Our team members are working hard to care for our communities amid novel coronavirus COVID-19. We THANK each and every one of our team members for their incredible dedication to the communities we serve. For serving on the front lines of providing health care to our friends, neighbors and loved ones. And for going above and beyond.
