In honor of Black History Month, we are showcasing some of the contributions that African Americans have made to the AEC industry every Friday in February. This week we celebrate Norma Merrick Sklarek, the first Black female architect in the state of New York. Norma also went on to become the first Black woman elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects and later awarded the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award by the AIA in 2008. In addition to several impressive projects, Norma also served on numerous boards and committees. #BlackHistoryMonth
In honor of National Cancer Prevention Month, we’re highlighting a project we did a few years ago for Henry Ford Health System. This complex project included the installation of the world’s first LINAC-based, MRI-guided radiation therapy system able to image and treat patients simultaneously, more accurately, and in less time—an incredibly exciting advancement in healthcare. #CancerPreventionMonth
In honor of Black History Month, we are showcasing some of the contributions that African Americans have made to the AEC industry. This week we celebrate Robert Taylor, the first Black graduate of MIT and first accredited Black architect in the U.S. He designed several buildings at Tuskegee University and was appointed to the Mississippi Valley Flood Relief Commission by President Hoover in 1927. He also designed the Booker Washington Agricultural and Industrial Institute campus in Liberia. #BlackHistoryMonth
SSOE | Stevens & Wilkinson was recently honored with AIA Atlanta’s People’s Choice Award for their work on the Oxford College of Emory University’s new Student Center—winning in the renovation / restoration category. Since its completion, the Student Center has quickly presented itself as the central hub on campus, enticing students to explore the new building’s vibrant and energetic interior. #SSOEsoutheast
In October, our Owens Community College Dana Center project was honored with the Annual Excellence in Workforce Development award by the Ohio Economic Development Association. The Dana Center, a 59,000 SF advanced manufacturing training facility, focuses on expanding and preparing new and incumbent skilled workers in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. SSOE’s Tim Swartz, Higher Education Architect and Training Center Specialist, is featured in this video that highlights some of the great things this new facility has to offer. #WorkforceDevelopment
