Ambitious Innovative Company but Very Negative Culture

Pros

Benefits were actually pretty decent at this organization. There are a lot of very smart people that I learned a lot from. Some of leadership is very motivating and inspiring. A lot of the employees are some of the nicest, hardest working people I've met. I learned a lot during my time here that has advanced my career, which I greatly appreciate.

Cons

Where do I even start? While OSH has such an inspiring, innovative mission, they do not treat their employees well at all. The culture has absolutely tanked over the past several years. They try to use excuses as to why it's so bad, riding on the "we're a start up!" excuse when it's not really a start up anymore. They try to even borderline brainwash employees into being grateful for working there when everyone is constantly overworked and severely underpaid, while leadership and execs are overpaid and get fat bonuses. Turnover is high, in the 40% range. This is not made up for this review, I have seen the actual numbers. If you do not have an MBA from an Ivy League school or know one of the higher-ups, you likely won't progress very much in the company and will get paid 10-20K under market easily. They will promise to pay you more, but they never will. Most people do multiple jobs to cover for all their colleagues leaving, or because the company just doesn't want to hire more people because everyone works so diligently and won't let anything drop. So they continue to understaff and underpay in hopes that they can get away with it for as long as they can before someone quits. There is no process anywhere. The risk of compliance issues from our medical side through our IT and HR is high. You get constantly asked to circumvent process because leadership wants to move fast and not do things correctly, because it "gets in their way to be agile". You get berated if you try to hold anyone accountable to process. If you start digging into the details of any department, the ugly reality of how things are run begin to show. This isn't the employees' doing, high up leadership pushes management and employees to have to constantly skip processes and find workarounds to make things work because they want things done at breakneck speed. It's not uncommon to get asked to drop important things to work on some "urgent" project for leadership within 24 hours, only for it to get glanced at for a second in their meetings. It's honestly such a shame how this company has evolved. The mission, what OSH does, and a lot of the individuals that work there are tremendous. Leadership has either stopped caring or never cared in the first place and is only trying to push everyone to their limit until they can get bought out and leave. They have hired a lot of new leadership that has come in and tried to "fix" things but have screwed things up more. There is so much potential and a lot of us saw it, which is why we joined the organization. But that potential is dwindling, and it'll only really benefit the executive leadership at this point if it pays out.

Pros

Decent benefits, nice downtown office, new and updated clinics, good short-term job

Cons

Every single 1-Star review here is 100% true and represents exactly how I feel about this company and how it’s run. Beware, all the 1-2 sentence 5-star reviews are fake and posted by HR. Oak Street Health bases it’s financial model on managed care. The Managed care push that they’ve been rolling out is simply unethical and doesn’t make sense for the majority of their patients. The fact that a lot of clinics are going to be managed care only means that many more seniors are going to be forced to sign up for managed care just to make the founders richer. This company prides itself on serving low-income communities, the majority of which population is on Medicare and Medicaid. It makes ZERO sense for those people to be on managed care plans (which limits their options even further). Nepotism and favoritism run rampant in this company. It doesn’t matter if you’re doing an amazing job, going above and beyond or working overtime to make sure your work is done on time and of good quality. If you’re not friends/family with the higher management or any senior employees, you’re never going to get anywhere. This company doesn’t value loyalty or decency in their employees. You’re just another number for them like the patients the outreach brings in to the clinics every day. THEY DO NOT CARE. To succeed here you have to play their games of corporate politics, be fake and do unethical things. People, that never worked a day in their life in a clinical setting and have no idea how clinics operate, are given practice manager positions and the PRMs/welcome coordinators/clinic operation specialists have to train them on how to do the job. Doctors are constantly overworked. NPs/PAs are treated terribly. New patients are valued over existing patients. As far as my personal experience goes, I felt mistreated and discriminated against on many occasions. If you don’t have an MBA degree from Harvard or Yale, you’re not a deserving human being in their eyes. Please do not work here, even if you’re desperate for a job. This place is not worth it. I’m very sad that I’ve wasted a few years of my precious life working for a company like Oak Street Health.

Honestly a Joke

Pros

None if you work in Outreach. Perhaps the care teams have it better. Don't believe the fake positive reviews (which, to be honest, are so obviously fake that it hurts. Most of them use the same wording/formatting). Referring to Oak Street Health as "fast paced" is missing the point. The reason it feels "fast-paced" is because there is a severe lack or organization and communication within the company.

Cons

What I will say has already been stated in other negative reviews, but I don't think that makes it any less important. If anything, it just means that none of the issues are being addressed. Outreach Associates make very little money, frequently work nights/weekends (and are not paid hourly, so thus aren't compensated for the extra work), are pressured into lying to and/or manipulating prospective patients, are subjected to constant rule/regulation changes, are regularly sent to events in dangerous neighborhoods, the list goes on and on... Now, a job with all of those potential concerns could be made better in a structured, consistent environment in combination with strong managerial support. This, however, is essentially nonexistent in OSH. The company is ridiculously political. I had a basic job at a restaurant in college, and it was a FAR better atmosphere than I was exposed to at an Oak Street Health clinic. Backstabbing, deceit, and favoritism run rampant. Immature behavior, such as brown nosing your boss and talking behind coworkers backs, will get you rewarded. Some people are able to do whatever they please, whereas others are ostracized. Perpetuating these ideals creates a very awkward and uncomfortable ambience within the clinics. You never know who to trust, because everyone seems to be looking out only for themselves. Management/Corporate is composed of people who predominantly lack backgrounds in science/medicine. Almost everyone is from a business/sales field. No matter what they say, I don't legitimately believe that Oak Street cares about it's patients. It's all about money, nothing more.
