We know everyone observes #Juneteenth in their own way, whether through celebration or reflection. We’re observing it by making it a company-wide holiday for the third year running, giving our employees a day off on the 20th to participate or volunteer.
In honor of Juneteenth, our employee resource group Black@23andMe sponsored a Speaker Series featuring Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, the sixth president of the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) and 23andMe Board Member. Dr. Rice joined us to speak on racial health disparities and the ongoing practice of structural racism that has resulted in enormous racial and ethnic health disparities, concluding with community-driven strategies and a Q&A.
The focus of this year’s celebration was Act Up: "We are witnessing a systematic effort to roll back LGBTQ+ rights to a time where teachers could be fired for being gay and 'conversion therapy' wasn’t recognized for the abuse it is,” shared Jey McCreight, Ph.D. Now more than ever, it is vital to act up to protect LGBTQ+ rights and health. We hope that you’ll join us in taking action to support LGBTQ+ rights and health. Please look up what anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is happening in your state, contact your representatives, and vote. 23andMe just released a new report powered by 23andMe research on rosacea as part of our 23andMe+ Membership. Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that often causes redness or visible blood vessels around the nose and cheeks. While it's estimated that about 5% of adults are living with rosacea, the actual prevalence may be higher. Rosacea is thought to be underdiagnosed in people with darker skin because common symptoms like redness and flushing are harder to see. Members can access the report to learn about their genetic likelihood of developing it.
At 23andMe we celebrate the diversity of humankind and believe LGBTQ+ people deserve to be healthy and happy, just like everyone else. So employees showed their support and #Pride in a photoshoot last week. Happy Pride Month from all of us at 23andMe!
Meet Aarathi Sugathan, Ph.D., Senior Scientist of Computational Biology on our Therapeutics team.
To celebrate #Pride this year, we’re encouraging everyone to join us in taking action to support LGBTQ+ rights and health. The need for collective action is also the theme of our Pride blog post. You can read the full blog, which includes actions you can take, here https://lnkd.in/gwveXdzC.
Our goal is to try to end Parkinson’s disease (PD) by working to prevent it. Learn more about 23andMe’s PD research at our new program page here: http://www.23andme.com/pd
As a part of our efforts to make our health reports more equitable, we’ve updated a Carrier Status report* on a form of inherited hearing loss that is common in people of East Asian, Southeast Asian and South Asian descent.
Thank you Dr. Davis Liu, Chief Clinical Officer - Lemonaid, and Chi Paler, Sr. Consumer Insights Manager - 23andMe, for hosting a fireside chat in honor of AAPI Heritage Month. In addition to speaking about activism and awareness, they also discussed AAPI representation and culture and Dr. Liu's leadership and activism journey. They ended their discussion by providing recommendations on how to be an ally which included educating yourself, follow activists and leaders and pay attention to who you're supporting in your community.
