Just one of the many unfortunate effects of the pandemic has been an overall increase in stress and a decline in mental health at work. In fact, a survey conducted last year by the Society for Human Resource Management found that over 40% of employees felt burned out or emotionally drained from work. While we can’t make it all go away (we wish we could), we can provide some useful information and tips on ways to reduce stress during your workday. For #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, we’re hosting a live stream with special guest speakers on Thursday, May 26 at 11:00am PDT. We will have a conversation on various topics.
As part of our 23andMe+ membership, we released a new report powered by 23andMe research on psoriasis. You can learn about the genetic likelihood of developing this noncontagious autoimmune condition most commonly characterized by itchy, discolored patches on the skin.

Last week we hosted our 7th annual Moving Day celebration to raise money for The Parkinson’s Foundation. There was a bake sale, silent auction and virtual talent show where employees watched 11 amazing and entertaining performances and voted through donations on which was the best. Thank you to the Moving Day committee and every employee that volunteered their time or talent so we could raise money for Parkinson’s disease research.
In our continued efforts to advance research in rare diseases, 23andme launched the Representation in Sarcoidosis Research Study earlier this month. This condition, characterized by the collection of inflammatory cells in tissues throughout the body, is more common and severe in people of African ancestry. Through this study, we aim to have a research cohort that is more representative of the broader patient community. #NationalSarcoidosisDay

Sadie Kiely's role as Senior Manager IT, Risk & Compliance covers everything from making sure end users receive top notch support while maintaining a strong security presence to overseeing ISO security audits while also supporting wider CEI projects. She joined the company right after the initial pandemic shutdown and noted that being a new hire working 100% remote had its challenges. “It was a bit intimidating starting in a remote work environment while trying to establish relationships but has proven to be very rewarding,” she said. Sadie now lists those co-worker interactions as her favorite part of being at 23andMe. “The relationships I've made here and the work we are all doing helps drive me to be the best I can be.” Outside of work, Sadie is a mother of four and a grandmother of a two-year-old. She loves all things outdoors including boating, camping, horseback riding, dirt bike riding and hiking. “On the weekends, you can frequently find me at the horse stable or on a beach trail ride,” she said.
In honor of Earth Day, we hosted a Speaker Series earlier this month featuring Alicia Seiger and Tom Heller, authors of "Settling Climate Accounts | Navigating the Road to Net Zero". Alicia and Tom discussed topics such as how and why climate action is organizing around the principle of pursuing Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 and how to become a more discerning and effective contributor to meaningful climate action.
23andMe recently collaborated on a study with Lundbeck, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Milken Institute to try and uncover the underlying genetics involved in depression and bipolar. This is another in a series of studies that we have either directed or collaborated in to advance our understanding of the two conditions.
