MidMichigan Health was named one of the eight inaugural Employer of Excellence Award winners by The American Academy of PAs’ (AAPA) Center for Healthcare Leadership and Management (CHLM). The award program is designed to showcase hospitals and health systems that have implemented practices that create positive work environments for physician assistants (PAs) and encourage collaborative provider teams. The program is the first and only PA-specific award program available to hospitals and health systems. “To be recognized with this first-of-its-kind recognition is a testament to the hard work of our physician assistants, health care provider teams and leadership,” said Diane Postler-Slattery, Ph.D., president and CEO, MidMichigan Health.
MidMichigan Health has announced that Chuck Sherwin has been named president of MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena effective July 1, succeeding Karmon Bjella who will retire on June 30. Chuck first joined the Medical Center in Alpena in 1996 and has had increasing levels of responsibility, most recently serving as chief nursing officer and vice president for business development and clinical services. “We are pleased to have Chuck step into the role as president of the Medical Center,” said Eric Smith, chair of the MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena Board of Directors. “He has proven himself as a hospital and health system leader and his experience and skills are an ideal fit to carry us into the future.”
Patients at MidMichigan Medical Center – Gratiot will soon have a more comfortable, state-of-the-art and family-centered place to give birth. The Medical Center has begun construction on a new Maternity Center in the patient tower, slated to open in early 2019. Featuring a more home-like environment, the new unit will have three triage rooms and nine private birthing suites where moms can stay in one room from labor and delivery through recovery and postpartum care. The new design is the culmination of a 5-year project during which the hospital sought input from patients, physicians, nurses and other experts to meet the needs of today’s families while enhancing safety and flow.
Each year, Healogics celebrates the outstanding dedication the wound center staff have for our patients, our people and our partners. The Wound Treatment Centers in Gratiot and West Branch have both achieved the Healogics Center of Excellence Award. This award is given to centers that deliver care in a manner for two or more consecutive years that exceeds the performance of other centers. These centers achieved outstanding clinical outcomes, including patient satisfaction higher than 92 percent and a minimum wound-healing rate of at least 91 percent within 30 median days to heal. Healogics added a special note of congratulations to – the Wound Treatment Center in Midland for achieving the Center of Excellence and the prestigious President’s Circle Award, which is given for overall center operations and growth in addition to clinical quality.
The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) has awarded a Bronze Beacon Award of Excellence National Certification to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland. Midland is one of 42 similar demographics across the nation and one of eight units in the state of Michigan recognized by the AACN. The Beacon Award’s three levels of designation recognize significant milestones along a unit’s journey. For patients and families, the Beacon Award signifies exceptional care through improved outcomes and greater overall satisfaction. For nurses, a Beacon Award signals a positive and supportive work environment with greater collaboration between colleagues and leaders, higher morale and lower turnover. Joseph Wilson, B.S.N., R.N., C.C.R.N.-C.S.C.-C.M.C., nurse manager, SICU, is pleased to have the team recognized. “This truly speaks to the quality of care and work we all do. Two new nurse residency programs at MidMichigan Health promise to help graduating nurses successfully launch their careers in the increasingly complex field of nursing. The residencies in Emergency Nursing and Critical Care will provide six months of additional training and mentorship for nurses. Upon successful completion of the program, nurses will have completed all relevant life support certifications, have worked directly with a preceptor for six months and be ready to work in any fast-paced and sophisticated Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit. In addition, the nurses will have earned a guaranteed job offer from MidMichigan Health. Applications for the program are currently being accepted, with only six slots available. Newly graduated nurses with a BSN degree and less than one year of experience as a registered nurse are eligible. “This program will provide a valuable bridge between finishing school and beginning one of the most exciting and rewarding nursing careers,” said Tara Neeb, D.N.P., R.N., C.N.E., clinical education nurse specialist, MidMichigan Health. “

MidMichigan Health has announced a $57 million construction project of which $30 million is dedicated to a new Heart and Vascular Center on the campus of MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland. Recently named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Truven Health AnalyticsTM, the three-year expansion coming to the Medical Center in Midland is slated to begin in fall 2017. The project is pending certificate of need approval from the State of Michigan. “With heart disease currently the leading cause of death in men and women both regionally and across the United States, we need to be well equipped to fight this disease,” said Diane Postler-Slattery, Ph.D., FACHE, president and CEO, MidMichigan Health. “We are committed to creating a premier Heart and Vascular Center that will offer world-class clinical care in a patient and family-friendly environment.
West Branch Regional Medical Center (WBRMC) has joined MidMichigan Health, an affiliate of Michigan Medicine, the health care division of the University of Michigan. The partnership makes West Branch the seventh Medical Center in the MidMichigan Health system. To reflect the hospital joining MidMichigan, WBRMC has changed its name to MidMichigan Medical Center – West Branch. “From the very beginning our board was impressed with the MidMichigan Health leadership team,” said J. Daniel Stoneback, chair of the board, MidMichigan Medical Center – West Branch. “We are confident they will help us go from good to great by increasing services, bringing new physicians to the region, and improving our quality of care. Becoming part of the MidMichigan Health family is a win-win for our Medical Center and the communities we serve.”
West Branch Regional Medical Center (WBRMC) and MidMichigan Health have signed an agreement which would make WBRMC the seventh Medical Center in the MidMichigan Health system. WBRMC and MidMichigan leadership expect the affiliation to be completed by April 1, 2018. Once completed, WBRMC would become the fourth largest wholly-owned subsidiary of MidMichigan Health. "Together with MidMichigan Health we will be stronger and in a better position to navigate the competitive and ever-changing healthcare environment,” said Bob McGrail, chief executive officer, WBRMC.
