Researchers at RTI International (RTI), a nonprofit research institute, have released a new data driven COVID-19 tool designed to help federal, state, and local public health officials and key stakeholders make informed decisions on how to prioritize important response efforts like contact tracing, placement of testing sites and vaccine distribution. The publicly available tool allows users to overlay local COVID-19 data with zip code information and then pair it with a series of local datasets including demographic trends, mortality trends, doubling time, estimated immunity and more.
Khari Johnson secured a virtual internship with RTI International to assess how misinformation affects people’s receptivity to health initiatives. Guided by Brian Southwell, director of RTI’s Science in the Public Sphere program (and an adjunct faculty member at Duke), and Sarah Ray, communication scientist, Johnson worked with researchers who were interested in finding relationships between news coverage, social media patterns, online searches, and behavior related to medicine and well-being.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, in partnership with the Duke Human Vaccine Institute, the coordinating center role for the newly established Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID) network. The CREID Coordinating Center will serve as the network’s operational hub to streamline and accelerate research response to emerging infectious disease outbreaks.

RTI International has been selected to collaborate in an initiative setting out to understand the risk of severe illness from COVID-19 and identify therapies that will slow or halt the disease progression and speed recovery. Referred to as Collaborating Network of Networks for Evaluating COVID-19 and Therapeutic Strategies, or CONNECTS, the initiative is being led by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced today a favorable scientific opinion about the monthly dapivirine vaginal ring (DPV) for HIV prevention. This is the first long-acting, safe and effective, HIV prevention product of its kind for women and further secures the DPV ring on a trajectory towards regulatory approval, globally. Researchers at RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, have studied the ring for over a decade through a collaborative effort with the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) and the Microbicide Trial Network (MTN).
As Black individuals are disproportionately killed by police, the losses are a testament to the harm institutional racism has caused for generations. Now, more than ever, we need more complete & consistent data to redefine the arrest-related deaths. RTI is at the forefront of the effort to use scientific methods to the effort to understand the impact of police violence across the country. Beginning in 2011, we worked with the Bureau of Justice Statistics on the Arrest-Related Deaths program, devising a method to create reliable, national data on deaths that occur during the process of arrest. This includes homicides by law enforcement personnel along with deaths attributed to suicide, accidental injury, and natural causes.
