Did you attend the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF)'s India Smart Utility Week (ISUW)? Country Director for RTI India Shalabh Srivastava spoke on a panel about international experiences in grid scale energy storage systems (ESS). One of the key takeaways from his presentation was that a supportive policy and regulatory framework is a pre-requisite to opening the market for ESS in India. He explained how India’s regulatory framework for ESS will have to be deepened and broadened by specifying the compensation mechanisms for storage service providers. He also emphasized that ESS will have a critical role to play in India with increasing renewable penetration. The right framework conditions will need to be put in place for ESS to provide inherent value in terms of reserve, response or price/time shift functions.
