High value, on target. Yesterday, the Lean Construction Institute held a day-long training on the principles of Target Value Delivery at our world headquarters. SSOE project managers, Lean practitioners, and senior leadership from our various offices took part—a group totaling more than 30 people that came together to enhance their knowledge on how to deliver projects at the lowest cost while also meeting our client’s expectations using the Target Value Delivery approach. Target Value Delivery is one of the 7 Essential Elements of Lean Project Delivery at SSOE. It leverages the early collaboration of design, construction, and the owner to integrate budget and constructability requirements as the project is designed rather than waiting for this input at a bid meeting—linking design with constructability versus designing in a vacuum.

Waste not: our office in St. Paul, Minnesota recently piloted a central waste / recycling hub to encourage employees to make more responsible decisions when disposing of waste with the goal being to eliminate waste through recycling and reuse. The new area makes it easy for employees to recycle batteries, compost food, recycle packaging, and more. With these changes, the office is certainly not wasting any time getting to their zero-waste goal. In fact, they’re currently about 90% there—an impressive achievement. #SSOEcares #chooseSSOE
Our Mexico team recently participated in a team-building activity at Enigma Rooms. Known in the U.S. as escape rooms, enigma rooms offer an interactive experience where participants are “trapped” in a themed room and must solve a series of puzzles and hidden clues to successfully escape in less than an hour. It was a great way for employees to exercise their collaboration skills and step out of their comfort zones while also having fun. #SSOEmexico #workperks #chooseSSOE
We’ve moved! SSOE recently integrated our two offices in Birmingham, Alabama, moving to a larger, more convenient location at 2204 Lakeshore Drive—down the street from historic Samford University and minutes from downtown Birmingham. As our Southeast presence continues to grow, this new environment will allow us to increase collaboration among our team to better serve our clients. #SSOEsoutheast #SSOEbirmingham
On Friday, SSOE's Erin Curley, Architect, and Tim Richissin, Recruitment Specialist, assisted with the Venture Bound Mock Job Fair at Bowling Green State University—an event for Perrysburg High School students enrolled in Venture Bound, a program specifically designed to help students with cognitive challenges develop job skills and plan for the future. The event aimed to provide students with an idea of what a job fair looks like while offering tips on how to interact with potential employers. It was a great opportunity for students to get acclimated with the job fair experience and practice the skills they’ve learned throughout the year. #SSOEcares
Last Thursday, our Portland office hosted Bring a Child to Work Day. A total of five children joined us for a variety of STEM activities, including a challenge that consisted of using popsicle sticks and clothespins to build a structure able to support the most possible weight, make-your-own circuit bugs, and code your name in binary jewelry-making activity. In addition, our tiny visitors had fun with virtual reality and were celebrated with a pizza party lunch. #SSOEportland #chooseSSOE
SSOE’s Marc Salisbury—who provides process engineering support on food and consumer products projects from our office in Cincinnati—recently served on a panel at the Lean Construction Institute’s student / industry forum at the University of Cincinnati. Marc, the only design professional on the panel, was very candid about his Lean experiences as part of a project team supporting our client’s evolution to Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). He provided a unique perspective to the discussion, bringing an engineer’s point-of-view as it relates to delivering a Lean-focused project, while also sharing his enthusiasm for the built environment to the more than 50 students in attendance.
Checking up on wellness! Our Nashville office recently won SSOE’s Wellness Challenge for having the highest percentage of employees complete their annual health screening by the deadline. The winning office received a complimentary lunch from Newk's Eatery, courtesy of our Benefits Department. SSOE incorporates additional health and wellness programs that promote preventive care and overall well-being to empower our employees to be productive and enjoy all aspects of life. To encourage employees to check in annually with their primary care physician, we offer a wellness incentive so that once they’ve completed their health screening, they earn points that turn into dollars that are then deposited into their pre-tax health spending accounts.
