SSOE has heart! Earlier this month, we participated in the American Heart Association of Northwest Ohio’s Heart Walk at the University of Toledo. As we live out our vision of designing and building the future, we look to elevate the communities where our employees live and work. Our CEO Vince DiPofi, a heart disease survivor, is particularly passionate about the health of our firm’s employees and health equity in the Toledo-area community where our flagship office sits, and we employ more than 25% of our staff. Vince joined the nonprofit’s board of directors in 2019 and was named incoming chair in 2022. With heart disease topping the list as the leading cause of death in the U.S., Vince put forth a plan for 100 companies to commit to cause now to raise awareness and address drivers of health disparities and implemented a self-monitoring blood pressure program, sponsored by a local hospital system, for SSOE employees. #SSOEcares
In December, we announced our increased community partnership with the United Way of Greater Toledo who relocated their Lucas County operations to our world headquarters in downtown Toledo. At that time, we also dedicated the plaza at our Madison Avenue building to the nonprofit. Today, with everyone at United Way now settled into their new office space, we have a beautiful new plaque to welcome visitors to our Live United at SSOE Plaza. A United Way Pillar Award recipient for over a decade for our annual giving and continued partnership, SSOE and our employees have been strong supporters of the nonprofit for decades. We look forward to the many events that will be held in this plaza for years to come! #SSOEcares
In Food Engineering Magazine’s annual survey, SSOE’s Jens Ebert joins fellow AEC experts to weigh in on what’s trending and why. In this year’s article, we learn that—much like in other industries—food processors have found labor scarce, difficult to retain, and in need of ongoing training. Is automation the solution? Our resident food manufacturing expert provides his two cents.

Fast forward to today and Brad serves as chair of the board. Brad, whose parents were both teachers, is particularly passionate about introducing kids to all kinds of career paths—especially those that relate to STEM—and played an instrumental role in launching our recently announced partnership with Toledo Public Schools. Yesterday, Toledo newspaper The Blade featured one of our projects in an article highlighting Toledo Public Schools’ recent investment in its Natural Science Technology Center from the perspective of student Charaty Belville. As the district’s design partner on this design / bid / build, SSOE is helping to revitalize the career training center for high school students—originally built in 1975—with mechanical and electrical upgrades, technology, interior design, and renovations that focus on equitably reconfiguring existing classrooms and support spaces to provide flexible learning environments. In addition to upgrades to existing spaces, we’re also designing eight new classrooms as the school prepares to expand its curriculum to middle school students. #WorkforceDevelopment
