Partnering for sustainability: Sharing office space with the United Way of Greater Toledo at our Corporate Headquarters demonstrates our commitment to supporting the communities where we work as well as investing in optimized solutions that speak to our dedication to Lean and Sustainable Practice. Rather than United Way embarking on a costly renovation or occupying space too large for their needs, we’ve created a mutually beneficial partnership that saves resources and allows the nonprofit to focus on its investments within the community. As we move our headquarters toward the goal of being a net-zero-energy-ready facility, we’ve also made a significant investment in LED lighting upgrades and slated HVAC replacement. #EarthDay
SSOE understands that it’s no longer a choice between going green and growing long-term profit—sustainability is the path to prosperity. With the AEC industry responsible for 39% of greenhouse gas emissions, we have a responsibility and an opportunity to make a difference in our industry if we work together to invest in our planet. In addition to signing the Architecture 2030 Challenge and Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) commitment letters, we’re also investing in training employees to perform net-zero assessments on our clients’ projects. And thanks to our Sustainable Design Strategy Group leading the charge, we’ve reduced our direct / owned emissions corporate-wide by 55% since 2019. #EarthDay

In addition to setting specific goals for our projects, we also set goals for our people to reinforce our core values. One of those goals includes challenging each employee to volunteer a minimum of 20 hours to their respective community annually. Last year, our volunteerism hours increased by nearly 50%. Another goal? Furthering our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We recently hired our first-ever Corporate Director of DEI, diversity among our leadership doubled from last year, and we made history by appointing our first woman president and chair of the board. Through training and information exchange, we aim to equip employees with the tools they need to make a positive impact in our communities, which is why 100% of our employee population participates in DEI and ethics training. We’re also serious about safety, so we participate in regular safety and cybersecurity training. #PerformanceReview
