So, vision boards and New Year’s resolutions have kind of gotten a bad rap over the years. We often end up feeling guilty when we don’t follow through on what we said we would do. There’s another ritual to try to rock 2025 that is free from judgement and disappointment! A few years ago, I started picking a power word or phrase for the year, and it’s been a total game-changer. It helps me focus on where to put my energy and how to spend my time. The process is simple: Take a moment to reflect on the past year and think about what you want for the upcoming year. Ask yourself: What one word or phrase will give me meaning, purpose, and focus? Choose a word that captures the mindset, focus, or action you want to embrace throughout the year. Here are some fun questions to help you out: What single word captures my desired direction for 2025? What do I want more of or less of in my life? (Peace, Satisfaction, Movement, Simplicity) What do I want to learn or practice? What’s a specific aim I’d like to take on? (One year, a friend chose “Hot Wheels” to help conquer her fear of driving.) In the past, I’ve picked words like ‘PLAY’ and ‘GET STRONG.’ ‘PLAY’ was all about having fun, going to a show, and even board games. ‘GET STRONG’ was about building strength in my knees and back. Trust me, once you start thinking about it, the perfect word will find you. https://theintentionhabit.com/word-of-the-year-ideas/
Over 50 years after his assassination in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as a prominent leader in the civil rights movement, a pioneering historical Black figure, an activist, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and a wordsmith. The impact he had on this nation is still felt today, and many continue to look to him for strength when the fight for equality seems to have no end in sight. Throughout his years of public service, he wrote and delivered speeches—the most famous being his 1963 "I Have a Dream" address—that provided us with wisdom that still holds true. Below are some of his most famous quotes about kindness, courage, unity, and beyond.

At Sequoia Living, we believe in fostering a workplace culture that values connection, growth, and impact. On Wednesday, November 13th, we gathered for an all-hands meeting at our Home Office—a moment to reflect on 2024 and celebrate the incredible work of our team members across all of Sequoia Living. This gathering was more than just a meeting; it was an opportunity to: Connect: Build new relationships and strengthen bonds with colleagues we’ve worked alongside for years. Reflect: Discuss the state of the Home Office, share updates on our 2025 goals, and explore ways to collaborate more effectively with our field teams. Celebrate: Highlight our achievements, including this year’s Culture Values Assessment, which shows our commitment to continuous improvement and making a meaningful impact. A standout moment from our time together was when everyone shared a "Bright Spot"—a story of success or positivity—and expressed gratitude. These contributions lit up the room and reminded us of the collective energy that drives us forward.

Sequoia Turns 67! In 1957, the formation of Sequoia Living (formerly Northern California Presbyterian Homes, Inc., NCPH) was approved by the Presbytery of San Francisco on October 3. However, the nonprofit was officially an entity in January 1958 with a mission to provide homes and services for healthy and joyful aging. Fun Facts: The Sequoias Portola Valley was the first retirement community built by NCPH. The newly elected Board of Directors, the governing body of this nonprofit, selected a site featuring 42 acres of rolling forest and meadows, just seven miles from Palo Alto. The next property was The Sequoias San Francisco, followed by The Tamalpais Marin, and in 2020, Viamonte at Walnut Creek! But that's not all— much has happened between 1957 to today! In 1967, Community Services (formerly Services for Seniors.) was established. In the 1970s, apartments for low-income older adults were created.
