Bleeding disorders affect approximately 3 million Americans, and Versiti Associate Investigator Shawn Jobe, MD, PhD, has made it his mission to help these patients. Dr. Jobe recently received a $150,000 American Society of Hematology Bridge Award to identify therapeutic targets that would promote platelet formation, which helps blood to clot. This knowledge will help investigators develop new treatments for patients with life-altering bleeding disorders.
Autoimmune diseases, from psoriasis to multiple sclerosis, affect approximately 23.5 million Americans—and their prevalence is increasing. Versiti Blood Research Institute investigators Demin Wang, PhD, Renren Wen, PhD, and Weiguo Cui, MD, PhD, were recently published in the prestigious medical journal Nature Communications for their study of the cells that cause autoimmune diseases. This knowledge will help researchers characterize autoimmune diseases and work toward better treatments for the patients who suffer from them.
Versiti Senior Investigator Richard Aster, MD, has made discoveries that have saved thousands of lives. In December, he was honored with the esteemed American Society of Hematology 2019 Wallace H. Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement in Hematology. ASH honored Dr. Aster for his significant contributions to hematology through research, mentorship and education throughout his more than 50-year career.
Recently, nearly 200 awesome Rufus King High School students joined us for a successful Versiti CodeR education session on organ and tissue donation. CodeR, or Classmates for Organ Donation Education and Registration, aims to teach the community about the benefits of registering as an organ and tissue donor.
